Thinking of where to go in UK for a road trip ? How about NC500 ? www.northcoast500.com/home.aspxI'm going to do it one day Wonder if it'd be suitable for a mini Canonball type run (keeping within speed limits / law obviously) for charity ?

Maybe more akin to UK's Pacific Coast Highway 1, which is a far more interesting and nicer road than Route 66

I mentioned this to a friend last night and he really fancies the idea of doing it on his bike (he's got a BMW R1150LT and Honda Deville trike). Unfortunately he's nearly 80 and getting up to the start in Inverness is quite a jaunt from here so I suggested taking the bike, and that of another similar aged biker !, up in a van. Anyone know of a van hire company who provide one way hire ?
Cheers.

Me and the wife were just reading an article about this. My brother and Sister in law live just north of Inverness and the roads up there are great.
Its on the to do list once i've got an appropriate car.

If you do this just watch out for continental tourists driving on the wrong side of the road. It's a fairly common occurance as the roads are so quiet they pull out of a junction or after being parked up and forget what side they should be on.

I will eventually do this. Really wanted to get up to applecross this year but life got in the way.

I've done several portions of that and it really is great. At some point I plan to do the whole thing near enough on bike instead of car.

Prolly better giving them a call.

I did the Southern/Applecross bit of it this year, but in the campervan. Plenty of enthusiasts' cars out for a play at it. Loads of entertaining roads in Scotland, often with little traffic. The main routes to the Isle of Skye (Fortwilliam-Mallaig, Glenmoriston-Kyle of Lochalsh) are other favourites, then you have Skye itself

With the prospect of a bike trailer on the back for up to 3 more bikes so people can be in the van but sleep in tents. Idea is to travel 5 in relative comfort. Not sure which year mine will be finished though as its having the extensive Transit rust removal

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

Nothing fancy - mainly curtains or whatever for windows and removal of rear seats plus platform to level load area to back of front seats. Then it's be little more than a hard bodied tent Scooter can be put outside at night (under cover / chained to towbar) although the idea of a Caranex appeals - www.caranex.com/

i live up the North section of the route, I can vouch that the roads are amazing with little police presence. However with the NC500 being advertised widely, I can see the police thing changing.

If you need a quick nap, you don't need to unload for space, the tray can also double as a table or a bench when not loaded Ttfn Glenn
