Hey all,
Well I thought I'd sorted my carb problem but it's still not behaving like it should.
When the engine has warmed up it runs perfectly, however on first start up the engine will die when you touch the accelerator, unless you're over 2000rpm, then once you get it going there's no acceleration and it will backfire and spit flames through the carb for a few seconds before finally driving properly. Then if you have to stop for any reason within the first 5 minutes of driving, it will die again when the accelerator is pressed, or it will backfire and have no acceleration again.
Like I said once it's warmed up it drives spot on.
Any help/advice appreciated Thanks Paul

Have you checked the timing?

Manual or auto choke? timming tends not to change with temp so i'd be looking at if the choke is working at all ?

It had an auto choke that worked with the water hoses, but the metal coil inside snapped off. So Ive modified it to work with a spare choke cable I had laying around.
I made sure the flaps open and close freely and I've checked the timing (6° from tdc) and the emissions and everything seems to be spot on.
Don't know what else to check really.
Thanks Paul

Hmmm - I'd have said timing and choke as well. (I had a Fiesta that did the same when the timing was way out, ran like a rocket once it was started and warmed up, but it was pig to start from cold.)
Either the choke isn't working quite right or I wonder if you've got a valve sticking when it's cold? My hunch is it's something to do with the choke linkage not quite working as the automatic system is meant to.

My Triumph Stag used to backfire through the carbs when it was on Strombergs ; I put it down to a weak and poor mixture; both carb insulators were super perished and a little leaky. The timing was bang on that car as well, well according to the timing gun. Going to a Holley cured that .

How old are your plug leads? Drown them with silicone spray and see if the problem is better. If so, get new leads. Could be a dizzy cap problem if not leads.

Hey all,
Thanks for all the replies.
I've put new points and condenser on and I'm going to order a new set of leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap when i get paid, but for now the problem seems to be cured.
I advanced the timing til the engine was running fastest/smoothest and the car is running better than ever, no backfiring or stalling or anything.
So until something else goes wrong all is well.

It's a Weber 32/36 DGAV.
I don't think there's anything wrong with it but i haven't checked to be honest.
No harm checking it tho, thanks for the heads up.
