Peugeot 205 D Turbo Diesel RUNAWAY plus knocking mystery.

One 1995 Peugeot 205 D Turbo, 39,000 from new with plenty of history and an expired headgasket. £199 inc the 4 pepper pots and 4 steels.

and there she is, no compression, belt running just fine block seems fine. a bit of a mystery.


Lush almost rust free shell

Pull the head off to find that the head has broken off at the chamber between 1 & 2??!!? No clue what caused this, not seen anything like it before. Cylinder has eaten some metal pits and the HG has been ripped.





So, got a new engine XUD9ET out of a 306 for £40!!! and put a new timink kit, water pump and clutch on it.

That's a Mardi Gras TD, not a DTurbo, its just had a DTurbo badge stuck on it, mechanically, no difference at all, but seats and trim were different, also bumpers and driving lamps.

I was somewhat confused, because it has the mardi gras interior but GTI front wishbones and vented discs and the D Turbo badge also no Mardi Gras decals on the doors?

looks like the hot spot failed and combustion cburrowed under the headgasket fire ring to the coolant gallery. wouldve taken thousands of miles of ignoring poor running though

the wishbone is standard to a TD model over the TCA arrangement on base models (i.e anything non turbo and TU/XY engined

They're a base model type hub (small bearing) with a 1.6 gti type bendix caliper and a 1.9 type disc, driveshafts are the same as 1.6 gti (BE box type inner ends and small outer splines)

oh and the "mardi gras" decals would have been on the wings just in front of the "205" that's on the door, and a "mardi gras" where the "DTurbo" badge has been stuck on the back.


DTurbo was essentially an XS with the DT engine, so had the gti type seats and front valence with the driving lamps.

Before you chuck that old head out, remove the shims that set the valve clearance.

It's always a good idea to keep the old ones as spares in case you ever need to rebuild any other xud head

I intend to salvage many things from the old motorxbox though I haddn't thought of the shims. Good shout!

I have worked out the solonoid thing, and have the engine running and stopping.

A days work on her tomorrow and hopefully I can take her for a spin roond the block and pics!

RIGHT! Well, let me tell you a story about this bloody failmobile.



So after getting it back from the garage who put the engine in for me, I had only been moving it in and out of my workshop come stockroom.



When all of a sudden it becomes difficult to get into gear and then crunch. Nasty scraping noises from the bell housing. So I am pretty curse word dissappointed and decide to send it back to the garage its just come from (they put in a new valeo clutch kit when we put the 205's BE3 box onto the 306's XUD9). So I purchase and get fitted a new clutch fork aswell as the 2nd new clutch. Heres the best pic I could get through the gearbox inspection flap.



I might have taken a photo of the clutch when it came out, I dunno I'm curse word at this write up malarky.

The quest continues for a power steering pump for it. I have one in a carrier bag I have been assured is correct but TBH the amount of time I've had to look at it it could be a bag of turnips.

So the car is back in my possession with a new 3 piece clutch and fork. it works like a peach.

I'm not happy with the way the radiator sits, it won't stay in its mounting holes.

Also the front bumper doesn't fit, all the plastic brackets are broken and I'm bored and have a distinct lack of direction and mojo so I put the front bumper on ratlook styleeeee and tape some trade plates to it and drive it for MOT.

So it fails.

My headlamps are different colours, my bottom wishbone is hanging off, my rear shocks are made entirely of rust and hope.

Oh and I couldn't be arsed to tie the battery down so its just sliding about in the boot.

Oh and my brake drums are oval! But now I have 10 days to rectify the situation and get it roadlegalishmaybe so I can have a rolling project cos its been 4 months of lazyness and I need it sorted cos I'm loosing the will to live and perusing the classifieds for japanese retro tin.

Oh there's a hole in the boot too.
