Trying to sort out the old Realistic rig I have, currently the SWR is higher on channel 1 (3.0) than 40 (2.2) according to everything I've read this means the antenna is electrically short so I've lengthened it over 30mm in 5mm increments rechecking each time and its made absolutely curse word all difference!!! Its a mag mount onto the steel van roof so the ground plane should be good, have checked all my connections with the multimeter and there is continuity where there should be and none where there shouldn't. I'm stuck now, don't remember having these problems back in the day when it was all illegal anyway I want to get it sorted out as i'm going to treat myself to one of the new President rigs as i could never afford one before when I had CB.... Suggestions please??

Where there other vehicles and buildings close by when you tried to SWR it? These can cause reflections and give a false reading. Ideally SWRing should be done in an open space.

Sorry to hijack but I have a cb rig (old 80's thing) that I'm still 50/50 about putting in the 924...do people still use cb radios and would there be any "coverage" (or whatever it is) out in the sticks on Anglesey?

As CB is person to person (unlike a mobile phone which is person to base station to person) coverage is more about how many other people within about a five mile radius of you that are on the air at any one time. Buildings and hills will obviously effect range. Before fitting it why not just try setting it up with a mag mount on a biscuit tin to see if anyone else nearby has a radio?

It's a bit dead on Anglesey these days. There are a few breakers on the island. I've had contacts into Southport and Lancashire whilst on holiday there.

Been through that thanks, the only thing I can come up with is a bad ground plane which I can't understand as its a steel roof that the mag mount is sat on.
