Did they ever do a road going equivalent of the Porsche 935?
Okay I was thinking about this more this morning on the way in to work... what was the FIRST Hot production (non-sports) car to be offered from the dealer?

Maybe not the first, but how about the Benz 39/100hp, from 1912. Having 100hp in 1912 was a big deal! All they needed was a 10 litre inline four cylinder to do it. mercedes-benz-publicarchive.com/marsPublic/en/instance/ko/Benz-39100-hp-1912---1920.xhtml?oid=4353&viewType=listTechnically, it's pretty difficult to pin down the first hot 'non-sports car', as (apart from Ford Model T's) most pre-war cars were sold as chassis, with coachwork made to order. This meant that you could buy a very powerful/sporting chassis and order it with a four-door tourer or even limousine body, if you so desired. Hence, it's hard to define a factory 'hot' car.

Did they ever do a road going equivalent of the Porsche 935? Does this count? RUF RSR 935 from 1984. 400hp, 0-60 in 4.4 and top speed of 176mph While on the subject of RUF, how about a yellowbird? I'd like it to go on the record that I definitely would

Hence, it's hard to define a factory 'hot' car. yeah I was tempted to clarify Post-War mass production as pre-war things are a lot woolier

A Viper Green Yellowbird would be the ultimate for me. There are two for sale near me in the same garage. One for CHF 348,000 in blue and if you have 50,000 more you can have Alois Ruf's old nail which is forest green......

Basically the poverty spec, entry level model, but if you knew your onions and ticked the right boxes at the dealer's you could have had it with a supercharged 312ci Thunderbird engine. There was also the J2 engine with triple carb manifold, available on Oldsmobiles in the same year that was good for about 300 HP. Once again it was all about playing the options list rather than a specific model in the range.

Yeah. Got to love the old days of ticking the boxes on the order sheet to get what you want and only want you want. When a radio, a heater, and carpet were extra cost options and even the Fairlane and Galaxie were available as bare bones family workhorses. Real shame those days are long past.

Isn't there a Carlsson edition for this as well? Or was it just cosmetic? According to wiki its 5bhp down on the Aero for some reason... Looks to be based on the pre-facelift though which could explain it I suppose Carlsson was only a 2ltr turbo. Aero was a 2.3 turbo.

However the 2ltr was a more rev happy engine liked to be thrashed. The 2.3 was more lazy.

No mention of the E34 540i? Bought mine (a touring) 18 months ago. I'd always wanted one, with our first born on the way and a 60kg dog it made sence. Love the fact it's a proper wolf in sheeps clothing, with only the badges and very discreet chin spoiler the give aways. Just shy of 300bhp and a 4l V8, you would have had to go a long way to get quicker in 1995.

My new Arbarth 595 Competizione surprises quite a few 'quick' cars out on the road....
180 brake and 1,000 kilos along with a 'proper' boosting turbo and a stainless exhaust that crackles and bangs on the overrun means lots of fun on the daily commute!!!!
She's just clicked over 500 miles so still tight as a drum....can't wait for her to loosen up a bit!!!!!

But with only 227 540i made and approximately 30 left in the UK - properly rare. I know that some Alpinas are quicker, but I can't count them in my head as they're a sanctioned tuning house and not BMW.

First and best! In your heart of hearts you all KNOW the answer! 1964 Pontiac Tempest GTO! The car John Delorean had to sneak past the GM management as an option pack but was in fact a model in its own right and the first of the showroom floor muscle cars! The Triumph Vitesse is another contender but it didn't get properly quick till the 2 litre upgrade of 1966!
