Spotted this in an advert while window shopping today. I'm not overly familiar with VOSA rules and regs, but I never thought an engine swap would require a full re registration?

its the fact its had a new chassis and number and the other parts used were second hand...so its a vehicle thats made up from parts...theres a scoring system....engine ..axles..engine and box all ad points to the overall score to decide if its original enough to keep its original chassis number...very common with landrovers

What woz said - an engine swap alone won't warrant a Q-plate, but changing a tonne of other stuff with it, or building something new from parts of indeterminate age will land it a Q-plate. What is it?

Wasn't the Q plate used for insurance write off's before the VIC check was introduced?

I would guess it's been stolen and recovered with ID removed. Will only be on register if severe damage when recovered if a claim was submitted. And no Q is nothing to do with pre vic checks. Was VCAR then abcd. Q is questionable age and as said is due to ID issues or rebuild from parts.

From the various shades of red on the passenger side pics, i'd guess a rather hefty shunt....

Wasn't the Q plate used for insurance write off's before the VIC check was introduced? No it wasn't There's obviously more to its history than a simple engine swap. More likely it was run on false plates or had its ID removed which was then highlighted at the time of the engine swap, someone probably went hang on why is this Golf logged as a 1.1 Polo or similar....could have got unlucky and taken it in for an MOT on the day the man from the ministry was there or pulled at a checkpoint.

As above, there's been more going on with that than an engine swap. And the seller needs to explain that. That, and the state of the bodywork in those poor photos is enough to say 'Run Away' to me. Offered in penance :

Had another thought maybe somebody bought a used bare shell with no ID and built it up using a normal GTI, that would explain the Q
