The cambelt on my 2L pinto went last night. I have fitted the new one but I am struggling to get it timed right so it will start. I used the method in the Haynes manual to point the key on the bottom pulley in line with the top pulley, put the top pulley to the dot. I cant see a mark on the dizzy. I pointed it towards what I thought was plug lead 1 but it isn't working. Is no.1 cylinder at the belt end or the back of the engine?
Also now I have the bottom pulleys back on I can use the timing marks on the outer pulley. What should this be set at? the first mark or one of the other ones?
Thanks

Are there any tippex marks on the pulleys? Could it be 180 degrees out on the timing?

No 1 cylinder is the belt end of the engine.

Correct, No. 1 cylinder at the front of the engine. Arrow on top pulley inline with dot on head: correct. Key of bottom pulley inline with top pulley. I don't recall that , but it's 17 years since I had a Pinto. Can you post what the Haynes manual says? Presumably, if you're cranking the engine and it's not jamming, you've got those 2 right, and it's just the ignition timing to be sorted.
[Deleted as FordPerv's notch-in-dizzy explains it better]
Also watch for how you've fitted the dizzy cap. The lead at the 8 o'clock position should be the No.1 cylinder. The cap should only go on one way, but it is possible to force it on 180 degrees out.
And as Barty says, is there any other damage? I can't recall the full details of whether the 1600 or 2000 is non-interference.

No1 spark plug is timing belt end, There are 2 types of bottom pulley on pinto engines so the timing mark depends on which type you have, There are no marks on the dizzy pulley but if you take your dizzy cap off you should see a shallow slot in the top face of the casing that the rotor arm should point to for no1 lead, like this in the pic, i popped out quick and put mine to tdc to take a pic for you, When your dizzy is set at this offer your dizzy cap on and make sure that it is no 1 lead the rotor is actually pointing at, if not take the leads out and position them correctly, which is 1-3-4-2 going in a clockwise rotation on the cap A standard 2.0 pinto is non interference the 1.6 bends valves Hope this helps you

Thanks all, Managed to find the notch on the dizzy. Had it pointing 180 deg out as though no 1 cylinder was at the back. Turned it round and it fired straight away. No other damage. Seems to run slightly better then before, no idea why. I think I set the crank pulley to the centre of the marks which would be about 8 deg.
2L is non interference.

Great to hear, who knows you ignition timing may not have been set properly before, just get it fine tuned with a timing light
