Hello retro ride readers
I have just bought a 1967 Vauxhall Victor off of ebay, if you browse the unfinished projects in the classics section you may recognize it.
I've always wanted to own a classic but never found one I liked within my price range and as my last project went up in flames (literally, it was a MB 190e and died due to an interior fire) I have embarked on a new project. This should hopefully be more simpler in terms on mechanics and electronics compared to the previous Mercedes I had. The advert for this car was pretty brief and only had 4 pictures so it was a bit a of gamble on the real condition of it.
Anyway enough talking lets see some pics of the car in question
Doesn't look too bad right? Well its all down hill from here i'm afraid
Rust
More rust
Even more rust. The drivers side wing is completely rusted along the top and split apart at the trim
Bubbling along the window edges
Hole in the boot floor
More boot rust
The advert said it came with a spare engine. I think that may have been wishful thinking
One of the previous owners felt the need to stick on lots of curse word like plastic reflectors and spotlights on the front and various stickers and badges. All of which will i'll be getting shot of.
Torn vinyl on both rear pillars is torn and will all be coming off at some point. Also there is an ariel on both sides for some reason.
Now for some engine shots, theres been a few bodge jobs in here it seems although at least the alternator conversion seems half decent even t if the alternator itself its knackered as I later found out.
Dodgy wiring, fuel pump has been converted to an electric one but wasn't attached to anything so was just hanging freely.
Spark plug being used to plug a hole
Some sort of home plumbing set up going on here
Lastly some interior shots
Both floor pans seemed pretty decent although I only got a picture of the drivers side
It also came with a spare back seat which was its decent condition
Not sure if these heat scoops are standard or not?
More crappy 'improvements' from previous owners
Looks like a radio was badly fitted at some point in the past. I think the ugly switch panel under the dash is for the fog lights
These were what were being used as front speakers. They look like home stereo ones
So thats the car, I only got it home around 5pm so only worked on it for few hours. Managed to get it started and running briefly but as mentioned the alternator seems to be knackered so it doesn't run for long but at least it starts and moves.
The guy I bought it from said it ran roughly when he bought it in February but hadn't started it since. We had to clean out the injectors on the carb and ran the fuel hose to a jerry can with fresh unleaded petrol and leaded additive in it so it wasn't sucking up stale fuel from the tank. WE cleaned up all the spark plugs as they looked a bit worse for wear and it started up pretty well. Hopefully once the alternator is swapped out it should be ok.
The front brakes don't work so thats on next on my list of things to fix with a possible disk brake conversion.
Once its goes and stops ok then i'll move on to fixing the rust. My plan is to do enough to get it through an MOT so I can drive it about then move onto tackling it properly.
Now I must mention i've never welded anything in my life so i'm going to have to learn how to do this. Luckily my dad has done lots of welding previously so i'm not completely on my own here. Also most of my car working experience has been on a new cars and by new I mean 25 year old 190e's so this will be all completely different for me. I've also never documented working on my cars before so i'm planning to try and do it properly this time.
I'll probably need help with bits and pieces so you may find me asking a few questions over in the technical section. Anyway thanks for reading
