What head units and speakers are people using in there classics? The reason i ask is... I've been trying to get a good sound in my old Escort but really struggling. Right now i've got an old Gelhard GXR 214X?? (mp3 Aux) Cassette deck + Edge amplifier + edge speakers. The idea was to get a better sound using the amp and the speakers but, I'm just not getting what I want... in comparison to other cars, my 2002 Focus sounds great as standard and i remember having a good sound in my old 1995 Escort with a standard cassette deck too, which sounded good. I know i should jack it in and put a CD player in it... i really like tapes, have a lot of them, have a lot of records i can tape to cassette... any ideas? I'm thinking of upgrading the cassette deck to maybe a really good hi end cassette and better speakers... but i don't know what yet? like this... What have you guys got?

Ive been looking forward to a thread like this ! one of the first thing i did was swith to a modern stereo, but soon i got tired of the bright blue light and had some fun fitting the old stereo again ! i got the car with a Pioneer KE-4900 i killed the original 7 pin plug fitting the new stereo so had to smart up fitting the old again 8) with that done i hooked it all up to some kind of filter i never can remember the name of: which resulted in a old working stereo now with phono exits xD fitted it all again and had my fun with it. the result was mildly dissapointing, the filter newer worked properly due to the pioneer KE-4900 only having 3 wires to connect up the front speakers and no external radio antenna Sound was always a bit dodgy although not bad at all ! the conencted speakes, sub and amp i got for free so i have no high expectations for it, front door speakers is only midle tone while i got tiny diskant speakers (those tiny ones for high tones) hidden in the parcel shelf? in the back i got an amp + a sub for some loudness ! everything was good for a while until i got a bit bored with it again, so i fitted this little device which connect to my phone with bluetooth and hijacks a predetermined FM station on the stereo for some nice MP3 action ! (i can only connect the first 2 minutes the car is on, if i wanted a switch i could have installed the one that game with the gadget but i didnt want to make any holes in the car to fit it Future plans are alot like yours, get a highend old stereo, and some nice highed speakers and maybe a smaller more effective sub but then thats also about it for now 8) been looking for ages for the right stereo at the right price

Thanks for the positivity mate! I know its a bit of a funny subject and a lot of people think just bung a modern stereo in... most of the reason for getting my car was to listen to the old cassettes like i did in my older (but newer) Escort and when i was a kid.
Just having some bad luck... with cheap cassette decks i think... and speakers. I also don't want to cut into the door cards so having to mount them by the feet makes it a bit tricky to get a good sound.

No pics I'm afraid definitely didn't want modern unit in my 100E as it would've spoiled the 1950's dash and there are other electrics in the glovebox so hiding one in there was out. In the end I fitted a chromed cassette player with some 60's or 70's shelf speakers which my grandad had in a Capri back in the day. I've put newer Pioneer speakers in the pods to improve the sound a bit and tho it's not fantastic it does mean I can run the iPod in there! Likewise I didn't want to chop my povo spec Metro for a radio so I just chuck a Bluetooth speaker on the dash if I want noise.

Got a high end Pioneer tape deck in my E30 ordered new with the car back on '88. In the spring I replaced all the original OEM speakers with decent second hand originals, the old ones were properly shot! Now sounds like a new 80s stereo, perfect. So tapes...sorted, FM radio, sorted.
MP3 and all that malarky comes through a tape adaptor to a 3.5mm jack so anything with a headphone output can play through it. Simple, and it works really well. Bought it years ago for a quid off the Bay of Evil as my old Del Sol had its factory tape deck and I didn't want to rip it out, now that's value for money!
I'll stick up a piccy, I do love a bit of old school hi-fi.
Anyone on here rocking an old school Nakamichi? Must be one, come on, make me jealous!

I had the original blaupunkt in my '81 924 but replaced it (still got it if I decide to go back to "stock") now have an (almost) period correct grundig radio cassette head unit, with hidden boot installed cd changer and dab radio receiver and a hidden (in the centre console/cassette holder) Ipod install... speakers are factory install OE porsche items...So all bases are covered! And sounds good enough to my ears:) I'll get some pics up tomorrow

Easier to get equal path lengths.

Thats part of my problem... i bought the original escort mk3 speaker pods and the speakers don't fit that well in them... Its hard working with a car with hardly any interior, pov spec haha.
What makes are good old decks? i've just seen some mad overpriced stuff on ebay.

A dislike of cutting my car up has lead to an audio compromise. Monza: Alpine 3 disc in dash unit Sony front speakers (modern ones and the Monza has 10cm one side and 13cm the other). 6x9 in the back on BMW adaptors so they fit in the standard speaker places then an active sub because the Monza is awful for sound systems. 2300S Sony CD head unit No front end as there's nowhere to put it. Infinity 6x9 in the rear shelf which I cut many years ago and have regretted since and it's given me a phobia of cutting holes in cars.... Active sub in boot. I can listen to music and it doesn't sound as bad as the awful factory system so therefore I must be happy. Not settled on a head unit yet though. Sent from my sofa using proboards

Ok, so not quite Nakamichi or even 'retro' by most people's standards, but it is period correct- Becker Traffic Pro in my XG30.. Standard speakers, Infinity Basslink all-in-one sub, sounds sublime..

I'm on a bit of an audio install kick atm so I'm planning on building something good in the truck. Modern HU but try and separate the screen and buttons off and wire to the standard radio or custom switch panel. Then tweets in the dash, mids in the kick and sub, likely an 8, under the bench. Hiding the speakers isn't too hard just got to be willing to cut things up. But it's easier when you have no interior to start with.

That's a moist rating of 4.7 out of 5. Nice user name BTW!

I have a modern Alpine head unit in my P100 (Only because I couldn't source a classic 90's one with 2 x pre-out's)
that is connected to an early 90's Caliber 2 x 70w Amp with Rockford Fosgate Mid's n tweets (tweets high on A pillar) The other pre-out goes to a modern passive Kenwood remote sub under my seat. Sounds AWESOME!

Sounds AWESOME! I've got a classic 6 button Alpine single CD here (a 7906R, one down from the mega 7909!). For sale if you're interested? That's got both front and rear RCA outputs. A good example of how high end it is, no built in amp or speaker outputs.

I know the one Bruce - Unfortunately, my P100 goes up to Scotland tomorrow to be part of a private collection so have no use for it. Would love to buy it to stare at daily but ££ are tight

A good example of how high end it is, no built in amp or speaker outputs. I had a 7909 back in the day and never liked it. Very detailed but too harsh and clinical for me. Had some chips changed in it but made no difference. Moved it on and imported a KDC PS900 (from the states, they weren't available over here) and it was much smoother and warm. Loved that but it got knicked. Currently putting together a simple system with the Macintosh head unit, a Soundstream amp (either 405 or 705s haven't decided yet) tweaked by the amp doctor, a Soundstream Exact 10 sub and a pair of KEF Uni Q 8" front speakers. The very ones that were in Bob Hobson's 5 series in the early nineties.

Not settled on a head unit yet though. Are they ALL yours? I thought I was bad with an old school alpine tape unit (like in your pic, top left) An Alpine flip out CD unit, with DSP processor, and Minidisc multichanger with graphic display. About 5 Sony head units from the nineties and noughties and one Ipod Alpine from more recent times.
