Hey guys
So I recently bought a 1989 3Gen EX Carb.
It has been sitting for a couple of years.
But a couple of months/ 200 miles before coming off the road it had a brake overhaul with new pads and disks up front and pads out back. (As per the receipts)
Ive checked the fluid and its nicely topped up / nothing leaking.
As I put my foot on the pedal it goes to the floor with very little resistance. I sat and pumped the pedal and it hardened up and had a good pedal but it fades away again to hitting the floor?
What should I do?
Cheers

Well I was losing power steering fluid but ive fixed that now..
Brake fluid seems fine but ive not driven it since fixing the power steering fluid loss/fix.
Cant be related though?
Maybe just a brake bleed will sort it.

That, I'm sure is the Master Cylinder. When you put your foot down the fluid is escaping around the rubber seal, rather than being pressurized by it.
The good news is that it can be cheaply and easily rebuilt with a new seal and as long as it's bled correctly, it'll be as good as new.

Thanks Steve - but would I not then see a leak / drop of fluid in the reservoir?

Nope, cause it stays in the cylinder, but works around the seal. I should have mentioned that I've already done one of these on a 4th gen.

Ah a man with experience. I guess there is no harm in trying to bleed the brakes first - just in case.
Any idea of where to get the seal from? eBay comes up with rebuild kits for bikes or full complete Master Cylinders?

The good news is that it can be cheaply and easily rebuilt with a new seal and as long as it's bled correctly, it'll be as good as new. They were supposed to have the brake fluid replaced every 24000 miles or two years. If this was skipped then the brake fluid would absorb moisture and the master cylinder could corrode causing fluid to leak back past the seals. If you are lucky, a reseal will work, if not you will need a new master cylinder.

The M/C almost certainly has to come out to re-seal so why not just put a new one straight back in? At least you'll know it's good whereas with a re-seal you won't really know until it's all back together and bled with new fluid.

Ive bled the brakes and actually now seems to be ok? Fingers crossed it stays that way.

As mentioned above, did you bleed or completely flush the fluid? If not, would definitely be worth doing it. People (and a lot of garages) seem to think brake fluid never needs changing. I've seen stuff in ten y-o cars that looks like treacle!!
