I have a new project car, no room at home so I am renting a former council garage, NO power and nowhere to run an extension from.
I need to cut and grind a few bits and do loads of surface rust with a wire wheel on a drill.
Any reccomendations as to what I am going to need, looking for cheap and quiet.

Grinders need a lot of power to keep them going, you will be hard pressed to find one that is not only cheap but also quiet.

you need to know how much power the tools draw,then go from there.
2.2kva will power what need easily, but not cheap and not quiet!

What about finding secondhand 12v cordless items and adapting them to run off car batteries ?
My Honda generator is quiet - but they aren't cheap. Chinese two stroke gennies are cheap - but nasty (can be difficult to start, noisy and often unregulated output). No way could I run a genie of any type at my lock-up without people complaining so check rules / conditions / etc of yours as you might find not allowed.
What about a low powered mains angle grinder (I used to have an old Black and Decker that was 300 watts) and run it off car / leisure batteries and an inverter ? I ran the B&D for hours (trimming horses hooves !)off one battery and it still had enough power to start my van.

Dewalt cordless tools with the 4 or 5a/h (claimed anyway) batteries are fairly decent but not cheap, most council lockups have a clause in the rental to say you aren't allowed to do anything other than park a car in them so be careful as if they see/ hear what you are doing you'll probably be asked to leave.
Having said that theres people living in one thats local to me and they are fairly obvious about it.....

spend the money on good quality cordless drill and grinder instead. the makita Li-ion stuff is probably the best imho.

Brilliant, just happen to have a Bosch cordless with knackered batteries and found a ' how to' guide for converting to run from a car battery. Thanks for the replies. |

Second that , i looked into council garages and you cannot store anything other than a car in there , and you are not allowed to work on it . Mainly because people take the pssi and break cars and sell bits and do work from them . I have seen people checking around ones near me with clipboards etc so be careful . Pain in the backside as they are the only garages available around my way . |

i know its easier said than done but surely its best to look for another lock up with power, i know its gonna cost and it will probably mean its miles from where you live though but it sounds like you have a lot of work to do to it and with the nights drawing in you will need lights as well

Been looking at it the wrong way. Project 1 is on the drive at home, no wheels, driveshafts, suspension, loose engine and gearbox, I plan to get it to roll, dismantle the big security fence and turn it into a gate. There is just enough space before the sheds to get a car, I have enough 3x2 flags in there to make a solid base. Project 2 from rented garage 6 miles away goes where project one was  |

Main problem wil be, as soon as the local travellers hear the genny, they'll be in the lock up as soon as you leave.

Even if the lock up itself is private because it is Ex council and still on council land it likely written in the land lease that the garage is for car storage only and working on cars is not allowed. and also as said above security may be an issue.
