Sorry for the long post!
So I want to get a nice Volvo 940 like this one.
Clearly the wheels won't do so I am hopefully buying new wheels at the same time as getting the car.
However I am a complete novice at wheels. I have done my homework as much as I can and here's what I've come up with.
The 15" wheels on most 940's are as follows - 15"/6J with 25mm offset and 185/65/15 tyres.
I'd like something better looking, but still practical as my wife will be driving it and asking her to scrape over speed bumps and avoid pothole isn't an option.
So I was thinking of 17" wheels - 7J wide with 205/45 tyres. I think these would be about the same size as the originals so keep correct speedo operation and gearing.
Questions - is this going to be too much and would 16"s be a better choice? I don't know how to photoshop stuff to see what it will look like. I have calculated that will give 25mm more poke with the the wheels I am thinking of, is that too much? I have no idea! I have to get it right first time really as I don't have oodles of cash to swap wheels around.
Also, am I right in thinking all I have to do to correct offset is add spacers? So if the original wheels had 25 offset and the new ones 45 I need 20mm spacers? Also what type of spacers are best?
Do you need spigot rings with spacers or can the spacers be purchased with the correct centre bore? I don't know what happens when 20mm spacers are added, which may well be needed if I am putting FWD type wheels on a RWD car.
I am confused....
