Lock up / Shed alarms, show me yours

I am looking at renting a lock up about 3 miles away from my house and want to fit a silent alarm which will send me a text or email, similar to the car alarm feature on some alarms. It will obviously need to run on batteries as no power there. I want something that doesnt have a siren as so i don't annoy locals with any false activations. Show me yours!!

Not applicable to your situation but connecting the steel gate to the electric fence is useful for some folk.

By the time you have got the 3 miles to any break-in it'll all be over so rethink the silent bit as it's the noise that will frighten thieves off due to being obvious to neighbours. Invest in a reliable system so no false alarms is the way to go along with an air raid type loud siren.
Think about it - even at 60 mph 3 miles is 3 minutes and more than long enough for somebody to lift whatever they want and load it into a Transit. Given that realistically your response time is going to be at least 5 minutes, and even longer if 30 / 40 speed limits, then all a silent alarm will do is let you know whatever it's protecting has long gone

What you need is a couple of alarm mines connected up
Not silent in anyway shape or form but guaranteed to make intruders curse word themselves


And you absolutely should not under any circumstances leave it behind a pipe type plug spanner with a plug in it still

i hear you, but i still think stealth is the way forward here but i may be wrong. Can you recommend an alarm then that is a quality setup?

Alarm mines are legal, using blanks (which actually aint very loud) (Though there is then the fact you could be sued for tripping over the wire or hearing damage - no seriously)

Having them fire a live cartridge, even into a contained area is gonna land you in a whole heap of wibblepoo...

A live cartridge in an alarm mine wouldn't be a good idea without serious modification It'd just explode everywhere, there's nothing to hold or direct the explosion, the cartridge is only flimsy it needs to be put inside a close fitting tube as it would be in a shotgun....

You could make one to use hilti nail gun cartridges instead of blanks, if you use the black ones they are very loud

I like your friend's thinking kabman. If the thief is sneaking around under cover of darkness the muzzle flash from a blank 12 gauge shell will give him a hell of a fright even if the noise does not. Of course this works best in areas where it does actually get dark at night.
Shame the original poster does not live a bit closer to the lock-up. The red dot of a laser scope creeping ever closer is somewhat unsettling for an intruder too. And before anyone mentions it I am aware that the UK has ridiculously tight gun control resulting in honest people having the devil of a time getting hold of a firearm for any legitimate purpose while criminals increasingly go around tooled up with impunity.

Things are escalating rapidly!!! I thought about beefing up the locks and placing

but that would attract the attention of unwanted visitors. will research into fitting beefier locks/bolts from the inside but still trying to find a decent alarm system too.

It wouldn't really explode everywhere, it wouldn't particularly do much at all, I doubt it would even burn all of the powder charge; and you'd have to be stood pretty damn close to the angry end for it to do any damage anyways.



I was saying it would be massively frowned upon (in a police/firearms kinda way) having live firing ammo rigged up - which is how I read Kabmans post.

Is there just the one way into the garage via main door or is there side access door as well ?
For my old lock-up I simply made a very heavy (out of scaffolding) frame just behind the main door so if anyone opened the flimsy up and over they would then be presented with a more substantial barrier

Guns are outlawed so only the outlaws have guns....we can still have laser pointers though last thing I heard they were illegal in NZ?

Just as well I didn't suggest claymore mines.
There was some talk about banning laser pointers here because some fool was pointing one at aeroplanes. Not sure if it became law or not.
