Thanks very much for the offer Ian PM sent 6 "planks" just short of 8inches wide X 99 inches long X 1/2 inch thick. It was teak tongue and groove so there's some edge damage. If you want them we could always get them on the table saw at work and edge them. They have what looks to be a bitumen "protective" coating but that could be taken off with a sander or planer/thicknesser

Re the GCR Bridge
From this months issue of "Steam Railway" Managing Director Bill Ford has confirmed "The end of year target has been agreed with the contractors who will build the embankments and bridge, with a handover date of December 29th. With all the necessary funds (just over £1.8 million) in place, work is planned to commence in August. The bridge across the four-track MML will be installed during an engineering possession over the festive period.

been thinking about volunteering at the GCR for a while, love it down there, I just couldn't commit to a regular day, time etc. yet! So I was thinking, assuming its allowed, if you want / need a hand ever, I'd be very willing. Dying to see the pics !

That is a kind offer Iain, I will PM my contact details so that we can arrange something. - at least Rothley is closer than Manila! I am sorry that the pics are not showing - there has been a major issue over on Rods n Sods where my pics are hosted. But back to the Brake Van, I mentioned the stove, it is the original cast iron one but was badly cracked when I bought the van. I have tried stitch welding and now have two straps bolting it together. It now has two more corrosion holes at the top and back. So I either need to get it professionally welded or replace with a new one.....decisions decisions!

Re the GCR Bridge .... and in the latest issue of "Mainline", the preferred contractor has been selected - MPB of Corby. "It is currently envisaged that work will start on building the abutments in late Summer"

Looks like a bit of fun ahead of you there, that said it looks like you've done far more involved work on it already.
Up to Rothley next weekend, I'll have to look out for it.

Thanks Ian - The stove is a real bonus - I have even used it to provide fried eggs and bacon with a small frying pan in the open door! Plus I get to see the trains go by.......

Don't forget the big metal kettle of tea. Leaves mind, none of your bag rubbish. Ideally stewed for two/three hours. Bloody lovely and can strip paint!

Thanks for the link Glen - TV recorder now set! More time at the Brake Van! I have removed the old stove - it was completely corroded, as can be seen.... However I put the old door on the new, better stove (as it had a broken/repaired hinge.) and then bolted the stove back in the Van. I also removed most of the rotten footboards.

What a great project!
Incidentally, if you come across anymore of those guards van stoves I know a couple of people looking for one.

Thanks MrSpeedy - I bought my stove from a seller on E Bay, but I think he only had the one. The new stove has a larger diameter chimney stub and so I have welded an extra "collar" on the tubular chimney pipe. I have also repainted the mesh guard.

Yesterday I had a ride on a DMU along the new GCR Branch Line - the Mountsorrel Railway. Despite being just over a mile long, there are two stations, a large cafe with an adjoining museum section and the beginnings of a quarry museum section with sidings, a large shed and three restored local private owner railway wagons. There is also a good nature trail with outstanding views over the countryside to Bradgate Hill. This was the weekend of first public running and provided a very worthwhile visit, which many families were enjoying. Well done to Steve Cramp (who was/is a huge driving force to the project, the local community,GCR and all other supporters and sponsors. It remains to be seen how the Branch will integrate with the main GCR in terms of direct connection via Rothley?? ......But it is an excellent addition to the railway preservation scene.
