Not exactly retro but I had a shot of a W639 Mercedes Vito recently. It's probably a better drive than a van should be and it must have good sleeper potential. Either an engine swap or a re-map and something to keep it a bit more predictable under spirited driving conditions. A Transit must be similar in that you can really dress it down. It's unlikely to be any good at corners without looking suspiciously low though.

Here`s my sleeper, definitely fits the subtle bill: Tons of fun and surprises a lot of people! Under the bonnet: And the best bit...the noise! stick it on some black steels and remove the spoiler then it might be a sleeper......

Lol, maybe, but don`t think many would expect a hot hatch to go as quick as this, capable of 160mph...sleeper hot hatch! Big alloys are only to fit over the big brakes needed!

^^^ aren't they the same chassis as the W202?? You could fit the v8 from the AMG in it No one would know hah I guess you could fit anything in if you really wanted to but I know my limits so I'd be looking to tune one of the ultra-rare 123 models (3.6 version of the M112 petrol V6) or a three litre diesel version and do a bit of weight reduction. There have been threads on the Benz forums about the 123 models being intended for emergency services use, a bit like the old LDV V8 vans and minibuses, but the standard diesel option was almost as good with loads more torque and fuel consumption halved so even the emergency services went for the diesels. M-B's own records suggests less than ten 123s were registered in the UK each year for the four years they were available. Demon Tweeks list quite a lot of aftermarket suspension parts for them so weight loss, better handling and more boost might get you most of the way but I'm not sure that would be enough to complete with some of the killer sleepers (genuinely quick by any standard) already posted here. Maybe an engine swap is the best option?

That Mk2 vito up there came in a model, think it might be the 220CDI or something, cant remember, but it maps to 250bhp.
The Mk1 vito also came with a variant of the 2,8 VR6 engine, think they had different inlets and stuff to get them to fit but they are 175bhp I think.

The badging on Vitos is mad, seems very difficult to understand, but I think any of the 3.2 diesels will get well close to 200 horse with a remap but some have the "right" fueling and radiator and intercooler to get what I was told was huge power, way more than 200 horse, that might be the one you've heard about?

You may well be right, the one that I saw was reportedly 250bhp, also came with a £15,000 price tag... Ouch

Just had yet another, wish I was in the sleeper moment - and yet another supercharged Mini to55er too - arrogance that cut me up because he's faster than my Vivaro - just wish it had been my fantasy 450-BHP Chevette.....

Plain steel wheels are a bit of a give-away now that banded steels are popular. Factory looking plastic wheel trims and mud flaps to help disguise wider then standard tyres is what you want.

I think my 318is fits the sleeper requirerment quite well. It's a bit sporty looking so people think "haha he thinks that thing is quick!" As well as being totally standard looking so I don't look like I'm hiding anything (IMO banded or big steel rims scream tuned) Currently running 2.8 24v with m50 inlet, also M3 rack, Bilstien suspension and polybushes everywhere so it corners so hard it makes me laugh ^^^^copy of original tail pipe on new stainless system

There's a few cars that'll take all the running gear off a fast car as direct parts swaps - that mitsi minivan thing that takes all the running gear from an evo, for example. The merc sprinter vans with an om606 in could be tuned way, way over what anyone would expect, but as said before white van man is expected to go fast, so maybe not a pure sleeper. My capri looks absolutely rubbish - things drop off at speed, there's rusty tears dribbling from it's missing headlight holes, all the body panels are different shades of white, and before the new exhaust the innards of one silencer rattled horrendously. I know the capri is nominally a sports car, but they really aren't that quick in standard guise. Due to rust issues, the entire front end is fibreglass, and with a cossie v6 and the diff off a 1.6l, it leaves indecently fast. Might not do 150mph, but at the speeds you can actually safely do round where I live, there's not too much it won't surprise, until it breaks. Which it does. But it surprises the hell out of Beemer drivers quite regularly.
