Hello Retro Rides. Pretty much as the title. I have many small items on my project that need stripping of the layers of paint that has been plastered onto them over the last 45 years. My problem is i am struggling to find a product that is actually worth while. Nitromorse used to be the go to product in a time like this, but this doesn't seem to be the case anymore since they have changed it due to some new regulations. I have since tried a few different paint stripper products and once again i have had no success what so ever. So now I am looking for some recomendations on some paint stripper that will actually remove paint from metal items, calipers, hubs, rocker covers, small panels and such. I have read online and read some people recommending "Starchem paint stripper". Seems to come it at around £28 for 5 Liters of the stuff, I have no idea what i am going to use 5 liters of, but i suppose it would be handy having a tub of paint stripper kicking around on a shelf for the next 30 years. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Starchem-Paint-Remover-Stripper-Striper-Strong-Effective-5-Litre-Like-Nitromors-/262036146728?hash=item3d02924a28:g:iqMAAOSwI-BWQLRE It seems expensive, but its cheaper than Nitromores, and you get a lot more a well. Has anyone used this or would anyone be able to make a recommendation for a decent worthwhile paint stripper. Many Thanks.

Dichloromethane I think is the ingredient they have removed from Nitromors and most of the household types, Industrial suppliers still do the proper stuff I heard?

As said, methylene Chloride has been removed from nitromors, so its no where near as effective.
We use it at work as a cleaning solvent and it is a mega paint stripper. In its raw form it flashes off fairly quick, but apparently you can add it to wallpaper paste to turn it into a gel.

You need to add it to something or it just flashes off.

I used the modern stuff from I think it was wickes own brand, the trick is to plaster it on then cover it all in cling film then leave overnight, stubborn areas may need a couple of goes, it stripped the roof of our minor with no problems.

Langlow Strip Away Pro. It's really nasty old school stuff but works great.

There was a review in Practical Classics a year or two ago that gave the Wickes own-brand stuff as the most effective, but I couldn't find any at the local stores, and when I asked they couldn't give any idea when they might get stocks. Second on the list was "Rustyns Strip-it", which I did find on eBay and was more effective than Nitromors for car paint, but still needed a couple of goes. Interesting about the chemical, I have a five-litre drum of paint stripper here that isn't very good, I wonder if adding some to it will give it a boost.

We've swapped to Starchem. Works well for us. Nitromors is about as effective as wallpaper paste these days

Was in the same position as you...

In Decembers classic Ford they have a paint stripper test, They tested 8 different types of stripper, Nitro more being the worst,
Wickes paint and varnish stripper £12.99 for 2.5 litres, and
Rustins strypit £5.99 250 ml being the best
You have to use cling film over night for best effects,
Methylene chloride (dichloromethane) DCM Has been band in paint strippers since 2012

can you get por 15 paint stripper over there bud.its an american brand and works fantastic
what 998 mentioned can use cling wrap that stops the chemicals from evaporating.its messy and must use gloves and eye protection.she burns if you get it on your hands too.i normally tape up places like gaps in panels, places where you cant get it out.will destroy rubbers .gaskets too. but only takes around 1/2 hour to remove all paint ,but depends how many coats is on there.to clean panel i scrape most of the stripped paint off then use a wet rag to wipe whats remaining as it also neutralises the chemicals on panel
cheers Maz

So, I got some of this Methylene Chloride and tried mixing it with wall paper paste, doesn't seem to mix no mater what brand or method I use. I tried mixing it with corn starch and if I don't use enough it flashes off, too much and it congealed and became useless.
What are my other options?
