The Maserati Biturbo that I stripped and stuffed a 1UZFE into? I sold it. Just about broke even. Not bad, that build was fun. We moved house, we're all set up at the new place and I had to get started on this winter's project. My wife and I both drive petrol Dodge Durango SUV's. They both have the 5.7L Hemi engines in them. I have modified mine with a cat back exhaust, a throttle body spacer, a cold air intake and a chip. These things are tanks. (Yank tank) haha. Aaannnywaaay...
My truck pulls harder than a V6'ed MR2. I wanted to race them against each other the last time I built one of those but never did. These Durango things are AWD or 4x4, depending on how you select the transfer box. We get tons of snow here and it's coming very soon. They're fuel pigs no doubt, but our fuel is cheap garbage anyway, so it doesn't really matter much. If you hyper mile them, you can get 15MPG in the city and 20MPG on the highway. I drive it like it's a racing car so I get much, much less than that. Again, who cares, it's fun and it sounds wicked. Not to mention off road or in the snow, you will laugh enough to pi$$ yourself. Oh, and did I mention you can pull a bridge off it's moorings with one of these things? Fun.
I had been telling the wife that I was going to strip her truck out, so I could build something with it. She's a great girl, she said "Sure- take it all apart if you want to, just make sure I get something newer, nicer and more powerful in the drive before you touch one bolt on my truck."
I never did dismantle her vehicle. I'm always on the lookout for something fun, I ran across this Hemi Durango online that had only done 73,250 miles. These things have a flaw, where water can get sucked into the engine, breaking the con rods. Our two SUV's have never been a problem, but this one with 73K? It had that issue. I bought it anyway. It was cheap cheap cheap.
Here are our two trucks:
They are a full frame, 4x4 or AWD rather, with a 4 LO and a 4 Lock setting on the transfer case. They are powered by this:
Mine is black, hers has leather and a DVD, mine is cloth, which I prefer because leather is cold in the winter and hot in the summer. Anyway, Here is the thread update from my other forum, I just thought I would share the new build here:
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this "third" Hemi chassis. The engine is junk, you should have heard it destroying itself a few days ago. I have a video of that somewhere. It sounded like there was a machine gun going off inside the block.
I might build a 1970's Duster or a 1960's Power Wagon. I don't know, but I had to get started on something!

Looking forward to it. The mUZarati was great fun to read.
It's probably been done a million times before, but there's probably a PT Cruiser or Neon screaming for a mid/rear mounted 5.7L...

I'm really not sure what I'm going to do with this behemoth. It's a lot easier to push around now though! I'll take the engine out of it in a few days and see how bad the internal damage is.. I put the Chrysler saloon car in the garage and I'm hoping to get that running in the next few days. I might be able to get the parts I need for it in the junkyard. I have already used parts from the donor Durango. An upper radiator hose and the thermostat gasket. Mine started leaking the other day and the one on the rod knocker was good. My truck is fixed, no more leaky. Yay! I have a few days to think about what to do with this chassis.

Seat, sand tyres, supercharger, sorted. Nothing more needed, surely?

HA! Great idea! I do love the off road toys. I'm hoping the engine block isn't junk, but I believe that it probably is. This one will be interesting no matter how it turns out!

OOO I will be watching this one! Hopefully the engine is recoverable! Stick an old Dodge pickup body on it, then lift it, big ol tyres. Make a mean monster.

i no its the completely wrong type of chassis and its back to front but the way that cover sits reminds me of the the single seat racers from the 50s/60s where the driver sits to one side of the car and in my minds eye i see some beautiful lines on it. but I'm curious to see what you do with it

I fully understand what you mean Scatman. Something similar to the Plymouth XNR I'm guessing.

Now that really is a good idea. A custom off road military looking thing. Like a cross between a Mad Max desert runner and a GI Joe vehicle. I think that's the best one yet.
I have been working on that Chrysler saloon car recently, it's running again. The 4x4 project is still under the blue tarp, I'll get back to that real soon. Last night the scrappers came and picked up the truckload of steel that was the shell of the truck. The interior pile of plastics is HUGE.
I also love the idea of an old Dodge Power Wagon body on it but those are big bucks.

That studebaker (or as autocorrect would quite appropriately have it, stud enabler) is sex on wheels! But military mad max buggy though... That. Do that!

The 4x4 Hemi project will resume in a few more days, I am working on the Chrysler saloon car at the moment. That "North and south" front wheel drive engine in the Chrysler Saloon car has really been intriguing to me. I've worked on it a little bit now and done some reading on it. It makes about 235-255 BHP. It has an Aluminum block but it's prone to sludging due to an inefficient PCV system among other flaws. A valiant effort, copied from a Mercedes style V6 engine but has had a history of unreliability with engine failures at low mileage marks. They did offer a variant of this car with a manual transmission but they are next to impossible to find as these cars were marketed towards the luxury market, not the sports car enthusiast. It's hard to find any of these things still on the road over 10 years old, never mind the unicorn manual shift. This engine is a SOHC design 3.5L V6. One could conceivably use this engine and transmission in a mid engine tube chassis car. They're cheap to find a running car, about 1000-1500 usd for one that is in useable condition for a donor car. I've looked around and all I found available were headers and a cold air intake as performance parts for it. It's just a thought for a future cheap build but I think there are other petrol V6 engines that make more power, it's just the north south thing looks like it would be cool in a mid engine home built chassis. A quick google image search showed someone that rebuilt one of them and painted it like my Yellow 1UZFE in the last car. This current truck chassis, I am going to build something that utilizes the 4x4 system for sure. This will get me familiar with the engine and wiring so that when I choose a RWD version on the next build, I'll have a better donor car as a platform to begin the street car muscle car build. This Durango chassis will get me familiar with the engines and I'll use a RWD Hemi powered car as a donor on the next one.
