As i have an addiction to water cooled vw's, which is unfortunately, fully supported by Lady Borednow (she owns a Sear Aroasa as a Daily and mk1 golf convertible (clive)) and the addiction has also been passed to my brother in law (mk1 caddy daily and a mk1 cabby currently undergoing restomod on my drive), I'm running out of room at Borednow Towers! The drive is full of cars, the area in front of the garage is full of a car, the garage has the Derby in it and the shed is full of parts. Most people would suggest I sell some stuff, but we all understand that the answer is to build a bigger garage! Luckily we have a good sized garden and access down the side of the house, this is where the current garage sits with the shed behind it. We wanted a large-ish garden 'cos we'd never had one. We've since discovered that neither one us enjoys gardening and even cutting the grass has become more of an argument than anything else. It's been decided, mainly by me admittedly, that we need a bigger garage and the best spot is at the bottom of the garage. I'm looking at something that should take 4 cars and still leave plenty of working room around each one, plenty of bench room behind the cars and storage either behind in the form of a lean too or by a mezzanine or loft space over everything. There's also a plan for a 2 post lift! Before we get all carried away though there are a few restrictions and provisos that have got to be considered. There are 2 trees at the bottom of the garden that are over 100 yrs old and have to stay, I'm not going to be concreting the entire garden - it still needs to be a nice place to be, the garage must be wooden as i don't want a brick, block or stone monstrosity lurking at the bottom of the garden. ideally it also need to be architecturally interesting in some way. I'm trying to avoid a wooden box! So any ideas and pictures of wooden buildings or old garages are greatly received! One of the biggest obstacles to overcome to begin with is the 8 years or so of us doing nothing in said garden! Believe it or not there is a stone building/shed in the bottom right hand side of the garden! More about that later! and me and 'er actually doing some gardening! image hosting without registrationSo a bit of background and ideas finally published! These piccies are from earlier in the year and i have been busy clearing down some of the vegetation from the garden, piccies of the cleared and improved garden to follow, complete with the area of the garage marked out too. Sorry it's not too exciting so far! It will get better but this is aiming to be finished by Autumn next year. There are still plans to be done and planning permission to be sought prior to any of the proper ground works commencing, so it's not going to be a five minute job. As always comments, thoughts, ideas all welcome. Thanks for reading!

Friend of my father's has an old chicken shed for a garage. It's nice and wide and easily swallows up his car collection. Don't know how easy they are to get hold of though?

Got this builders hut free just had to take it down and re felt it,then bought some old pvc windows off the bay to give a bit of light. Get the council involved early, most planning departments are really helpful, you might get away with not needing full planning permission. Good luck with your build.

You can buy a green oak framed building done to your spec in kit form for not a lot of money. You just concrete a base and build dwarf walls to sit it on, as it's wooden in most cases you can get away without planning. Otherwise build in block then clad in wood, some nice hardwood if you are feeling flush with cash or softwood that will need regular treatment with creosote/ old engine oil mix or even wood preservative

Hmmm a chicken shed eh? Sounds interesting , I'll have to keep my eyes open for a bankrupt chicken farmer Remember that stone building I was on about? Well I unearthed it and knocked it down, it was an odd size, not really big enough to put anything in except the odd shovel but it had walls 2ft thick! Sledge hammer later and voila You can kinda make out its original size still, the blocks have been used to build up the area. The idea is to move the shed down here. More once the big storm passes.

That looks pretty awesome mate, sounds like you got a bargain there. I'm hoping to go and see if I can have a chat with the planning dept over the next few weeks. Thanks for the advice.

The idea of a base and dwarf walls is what I have in mind, I managed to obtain a load of 4" x 4" 2m long fence posts that I'd kinda thought I could make the framing out of, but that might be easier. Ta for the thought

Well the story moves on. Obviously with Winter came hibernation. Brrrrrr Suns out again so work has commenced A few changes to the plan though. Turns out we do actually enjoy gardening! I'm shocked! So it's been decided, this time mainly by SWMBO that the new garage will go down the side of the house instead of at the bottom of the garden. I must admit the arguments about the garden just turning into a place to stick cars and bits was probably a good one as we all know that we tend to fill all available space. Unfortunately the planning office were not helpful at all. Despite phoning and requesting a quick chat I was given a standard answer all the times I phoned 'submit an application and we'll tell you'. No help at all. So I've tracked down a designer that has been doing business down here for the last 50 years! Old boy who knows everything. For £400 he'll do all my plans and guarantees planning permission for that too. Only problem is that at just over 80sqm I'm also going to need building regs inspections. Should be fun. The idea of moving the current garden shed into the bottom of the garden didn't really work. The area was a bit too small for it. So i thought I'd build another shed down there instead, after all more storage never hurts does it? First I had to learn how to render to repair the wall to the back of where the new shed will be going. Another skill I'll never master! Still it worked and looks ok for the rustic aesthetic I was going for. A bit of paint to help protect it and we're all good. Looking around I'd got a load of 2x2 and 3x2 tanalised timber from a site about a year ago, unfortunately it was over ordered and needed a good home So I set about building the frame Floor frame down on a nicely leveled area and all blocked up. Time to make up the back panel and the interior of the roof panel and the sides and beginning to assemble and finally a bit of cladding. Under the cladding I added sheets of building paper so hopefully it'll stay dry! I also used the thickest felt I could find, so hopefully I'll get 10yrs or more out of this. Doors to add, and then line and install some shelves and we should be good to go. In the end it turned out to be 6ft high, 12ft long and 60 inches wide. Should swallow quite a lot of stuff!

It's just dawned on me that I haven't actually told you what the intent It's going to be about 18m long, 3.3m wide at the front (roller shutter door end) and about 6m wide at the back (garden end). It does mean I'm going to have to be careful where I start projects to make sure I don't end up blocking my self in. A bit of thought will be required methinks. As the front section will be built off the house it does mean I won't be able to go any higher than 2.1m. This means the lift might be out. If anyone has suggestions on lifts or ramps etc that operate with low head room I'd be grateful. Front Back Or something similar!

Are you going block now? I thought there were restrictions on combustable materials within 2.5m of the boundary.
As for the lift, I was in a garage the other day that had a sort of tilting lift. One ond of the car stayed low and the bonnet went up to the roof. Nit only could you work under it you could get another car under. 2 cars in 1.5 cars lengths and still in normal garage height.
It was proper heavy duty, not mickey mouse.
Ill try and find it.

You're a gent Guz! I am intending to build it myself. The shed was like a mini experiment ;-) I will definitely keep that in mind. I must warn you tho that I'm a lousy cook.

it's years since i had a proper holiday and i'm always happy to help someone out if i can, i'm a qualified bricklayer so if summat can be sorted i can do a week down south for a change of scenery, maybe it could start a RR work exchange thing ? it'd be nice to trek down and see a different area and meet new people.
keep my offer in mind if you can keep me busy for a few days (tent spot, coffee, toast is enough, i'll buy my own beer)

I think I could manage that.
I can do bacon sarnies too.
But I'd have to supply the beer!
I like the idea of a labour exchange, if I had any skills I'd gladly offer them to people ;-)
