I currently have what sounds like a bearing 'squeal' - I'm wondering if that's alternator or something else (cam belt tensioner)? Only the diesels have a cambelt, being it a PSA HDI engine. All others have a chain, be it the Chrysler SOHC 16V or the PRINCE BMW/PSA DOHC. Can't speak for the very very latest petrol engined models as I have no experience of those as yet.. Far too new

Eldest turned 17 two weeks ago and had been pestering for a Fiat 500, Beetle or a Mini. A little bit of me died when I realised she meant the new ones - I had visions of a Talbot Samba/104/205/Imp/Fiesta mk 1 etc but no. Anyhow, was v pleased when the 500 was considered a bit rubbish inside and she couldn't see the corners of the Beetle from the driver's seat, and ended up deciding she really liked the Mini.
So, as of last Sunday I now have a November 2001 Cooper on the drive. Yellow, full leather with bills for reconditioning the box, new clutch, exhaust, battery and discs and pads. 133k, decent history, couple of minor supermarket dings, full Mot for £1350. I'm quite impressed with it.

Ahh, obviously never encountered one of those either! I know the Chrysler timing chains are a doddle to do provided you can get the crank pulley off. The JCW Cooper S is a hoot to drive, to echo everyone who has already said it. It's harsh, crashy, but goes like a rocket.

I've picked up a decat pipe and have got someone locally that can remap these so should be able to eek about 100hp from it without having to do anything else. I have heard of people fitting bigger turbos and FMIC to get them up to about 120hp but I don't think I can be arsed with all that. Although I do have a universal FMIC sitting in the shed doing nothing!

Bought one of the later mk1s in the form of a GP. Been close to buying a mini a number of times, but this is the first one we've bought. Somewhat tweaked, and it brings a smile to my face every time I get in it. Damn! That is lovely! Why number? Are those seats standard? My work colleague has #0393. Thanks! It's 221. It's got a set of recaro pole positions in it, although I have all the original parts including the seats.

been great reading about these Minis, I think my next car after my ZR will be a new Mini, one of the earlier ones, but I think I would like to have a drive of one "just to see" first.

Far too new Sorry I meant aux belt tensioner, but wasn't sure whether these were belt or chain. BMW decided the engine didn't provide enough power and built their own. One thing I agree with, they're a bit slow. I have a s/s exhaust on mine and it sounds meaty with loads of popping.

The only engine that is vaguely BMW is the dohc PRINCE engine codeveloped with PSA. Diesels are all bought in from PSA..

I learnt to drive (legitimately) in one of these was a petrol one an 04 plate I think , and it really was a barrel of laughs even obeying to the speed limit. I would definitely consider one .. even more so after seeing them on some rota grids..

Fun cars to drive, i'm currently looking for an R53 cooper s. Engines are strong if they're maintained and i've only ever seen one major fault where a spark plug blew out, stripping the thread out of the head.

Hi Matt. No evidence the pump's been done, will keep an eye on it.

I work at a car auction and we regularly get Binis in stock, a few every week. Some are cherished trade-ins direct from BMW dealers, some are private entrant dogs, and everything in between. None have been ''proper'' broken, the worst being one with non-working PAS. EML lights on the dash are common, but I do like them. All have heavy steering which makes maneuvering a headache, the ones with glass roof panels feel lighter and more airy. I prefer ones with three spoke steering wheels as they just look better than two spoke ones. I'm tempted...

Are these older Minis seen by insurers as high risk now?

Are these older Minis seen by insurers as high risk now? Not sure on insurance group but my other half's is cheaper to insure than the Alfa 147 it replaced, by far!

I bought my cooper S back in September, TBH i wanted a mk2 Golf GTI as a daily but couldn't find a decent unmolested one so a mini was my second choice. I needed a daily driver that was good A-B , top speed wasn't really an issue but handling was,These minis handle great, and i really missed the Cooper R50 that i had about 10 years ago. I ended up looking at six or seven until i found this one, its a low mileage ex dealer trade trade in with a good spec. This website was invaluable www.bmwvin.com/ as it gives you access to factory build sheets so you can see what it has and what it should have! since then i had to replace the exhaust , i had quotes from national etc for a grand,BMW wanted £620 and a custom made system would have set me back £700 but with funds being tight i bought a 'Direnza' stainless system off ebay for £315 and to be fair its a decent exhaust, not to loud and it was easy to fit.The old one was a pig to get off but it was the original from 2002. They also have a habit of splitting the ribbed air intake pipe and mine was no exception so i replaced it with a silicon hose (£40) .Other than service parts and a new gear knob, its been fine. The previous owner was disabled and didn't use the car a lot so its low mileage but boy did it need a major clean when i got it ! After a weekend of jet washing ,claying and polishing it looks almost new again. Downsides? well mine has the sport plus suspension, i love it but it is hard and not to everyone's taste.I don't mind the steering being a little heavy, i'd rather that than too light but that's just me. some people say fuel consumption is bad, i fond it no worse than the mk4 GTI i ran before the mini, i think the 6 speed box helps. And i agree with Ryannn , the insurance on this was cheaper than the afore mentioned Golf, by about a third. Other than that all i will say is try BMW for parts, they are over 4 years old now and the prices aren't as bad as you might expect and ive found some to be cheaper than E-Bay And i found these websites which have proven helpful www.pelicanparts.com/Mini/index-SC.htmwww.minitorque.com/site/www.mini2.com/plans? in the new year ,refurb the wheels, service the supercharger, sort a whining wheel bearing and generally just uprate stuff as and when it needs replacing.
