Hi fellas, let me introduce this air-cooled V4 rear engined ride from mid 1970s. It’s a ZAZ-968 Zaporozhec (Zapo, Sapo…), or Jalta (Yalta) for exported ones. I’m not sure if this model was ever officially sold in the UK, only two dealers in Belgium (Scaldia-Volga) and in Finland (Konela) were the official importers of that kind of USSR cars. All i know is that the earlier model, of almost same design, ZAZ-966, had possibility to switch the steering from LHD to RHD. So, it has a 2 door saloon body, with the rear-mounted V4 air-cooled engine of 40 hp (30 kW; 41 PS) 1,197 cc (73.0 cu in), weighing in at 780 kg (1,720 lb), reaching 75 mph (121 km/h). This particular ride was born in 1978, had only 2 owners and by the time I found her, was sleeping in the garage for 10 years or so. First inspection showed “almost” no rust, engine fired up, clutch, brakes worked satisfactory. The body had the signs of “usual” exploitation, for which that car was intended for. Just for information – it was the cheapest ride for that time and a big part was intended to use by the disabled (without 1 or two legs, or hand) people, for whom the special versions were produced (for example, one of that version had an electromagnetic clutch, guess for one-legged, one-handed person). Well, mine has “normal” specs. So, what was done since: 1. Winter of 2013. The car was repainted, only outside. Body - white striped. 2. Spring of 2013. The brakes were overhauled and replaced from one contour system to two contoured. Top left you can see "famous" autonomous gas heater, "like" Webasto. 3. Spring of 2014. The engine also overhauled, cylinders rebored from 76 to 79 mm to fit the Lada pistons, the heads lowered to use 93 juice, balancer shaft removed, installed the carburetor from Lada 21083, new rear absorbers and that’s it. That's all about rebuilding. Sorry guys ( georgeb , raymondmarble ) for keeping you waiting!

So let's keep going on... As far as year of 2014 bring us engine overhauling and on the next day of completion, we started to the biggest adventure by now. Two ZAZs begun 4500 miles trip to Georgia to find out – are we able?! Well… we did! Notwithstanding my constantly overheating engine due to the fact that reboring of the cylinders seems was done as for water-cooled engine, and not for an air-cooled (which require a little bit bigger thermal gap due to higher working temperature) and the fact that we started the breaking-in of the engine in a trip – the rest of breakage wasn’t that crucial. Here and after i will post just only some pics of that journey because... well... i got a lot, Georgia is... a have not enough words to describe properly! Sorry but better go there. It's near Kazbek stratovolcano. Somewhere on Gomborskij pass. It's on a south border of Georgia and Azerbaidzhan, sometimes about a hundred meters to. Here is we started to cross the Goderdzi pass, over 2300 meters above sea level. On top of the pass. Batumi city met us with rainy weather, so we decided to come back to Tbilisi. On the left is Black sea. So, the week in Georgia ended, let's come back home. On a highest point of Krestovy pass, Georgian Military Road. Let's go down the hill... On the way back I caught the lack of brakes – modern spare parts is sh!t (i have replaced 3 !!!! NEW brake hoses during voyage) and the another ZAZ had only an alternator failure. The conclusion: – Zaporojec are able with its 40 bhps and overheating engine visit mountains in the summertime (daytime temperature was abt +35+40 C))) We crossed 4 mountain passes, highest had over 2300 m above the sea level. - Georgia is outstandingly beautiful country and the locals are very, just extremely welcome! - travelling on Zapo are quite comfortable, on the finishing line at home 3 weeks later, I was ready to continue that journey for at least 3 more weeks...

In that pic the front looks much lower? Something heavy in the trunk? Well, of course... there are all the spares and stuff for long travel. Abt 50-70 kg plus... It was my first "long" journey. And both rides some 3 or 5 cm lower than standard, because of modern size of the tires.

Very nice. There are a few 968's in England, a few running on the road.
I have a 968a and m, but need parts for both. Sadly, I was sold a 965 engine as a 968- much smaller!

Thanks for sharing! These look like great little cars, very similar to a Beetle in many ways. Apart from the V angle, the engine looks nearly the same!

Well, let's continue with the case... One of the cylinders showed zero compression... hmmm... Hmm... What’s up inside? Some mouse bit off a piece of the piston. And what was interesting, after removing the crankcase, no remains of the piston was found, only remains of the valve stem seals. Just to show you how it looks from the bottom Well, new piston was bought, "new" used cylinder was rebored, engine overhauled again. What's handy, to replace the pistons - there is no need to take the engine out. And meet the "New look" Later on, contactless ignition system (based on the ignition system for the Lada) was installed. Some new parts and old drive. All done. As the result we got all the advantages of contactless ignition system. Another plus is that installation reversible.

That looks great. Love the two tone paint and those air intakes look amazing. Glad that I now know what a Zaz is! Brilliant to see them being seriously used (especially on ice).

judging by the texture on the piston (detonation) the missing bit of piston went out the exhaust as molten dust what a quirky but cool car though
