Looks really good mate, I think it's just crying out for new plates or even a plate surround for the back, looks odd to me for some reason? Cheers, I'd guess its probably cos the plates are copies of the original dealer plates using the old Charles Wright font, so is a bit at odds with the newer lights Then again it could look quite cool with a heckblende infill panel, I imagine finding one of those for a touring would be nigh on impossible though! Edit: Found a pic of one, hmmm...

I'm going to go against the grain . I quite like the stock plates . There is something about a car on dealer plates me. Not only is it nostalgia and history about the car but it also gives a sense of honesty ; maybe I've bought too many dodgy cars over the years. Good to see you making progress .

Aye after a bit of time with the new lights on, I'm pretty happy with it all now Still might look out for a plate surround if one comes up cheap but they don't work as well on the touring as the boot button is flat so it would look like a hole in the surround.. Nothing much to update on this at the moment thankfully! Its just getting on with daily duties. Front Dampers are seriously gone now, I've got new ones and top mounts so I think I'm feeling lazy enough to chuck the lot at a garage and get them to fit. I'll be interested to see how it sits with the lowered springs Aside from that, the Sport bumper is at the body shop awaiting some fairly serious sanding and painting work, and I've got a DAB head unit on the way which will also match the dash lighting

Looks good mate, fair play for giving this some love.
While I was working my way through this thread I watched your random poor cold running video. I have an 328i E46 I know it's a slightly different generation straight six with twin vanos, but mine does exactly the same sometimes at cold idle. I only really notice when I changed the radiator and expansion bottle then ran it up to temperature.
It then drove me mad for a while, (mines an auto) but running it in neutral it would even occasionally stall (very rarely). However in drive it has never done it and once past about quarter warm it's fine and idles smoothly.
All the research I've done suggests it's the vanos seals, I'm tempted to give it a go but am worried about trying to get it apart and then whether to change the anti rattle rings and bearings which sometimes need fine tuning to fit correctly. Some people just changed the seals and say it's fine. Another mate didn't have the problem, but did just the seals anyway and couldn't tell the difference in the way it ran.
The thing is now I've forgotten about it I haven't noticed it for the last couple of months so is it really worth ripping it all apart?
Either way good luck and I'll keep coming back to this thread to check how you're progressing, I love it so far it's got a really clean sort of extra OEM look.

Interesting, I found the same when I was reading about it a while back, a VANOS overhaul was on the list of potential cures but after I did the cam sensor and got it running vaguely right, I couldn't be bothered I haven't noticed mine running particularly badly of late to be honest, theres the odd bit of lumpy idle sometimes but generally its well behaved. I guess I'll just have to monitor it for now and see if it gets worse in the autumn again. It is annoying not knowing the true cause of it though!

The BMW has come back from the garage and its sporting new front dampers, springs and top mounts, so no more rattly front suspension and no more massive front arch gap (Yes it needs a damn good wash) Its got a little bit of front rake now but I'm going to drive it for a bit and see how it all settles, might lower the rear a bit if it looks silly. I'm also going to space out the wheels a little just to make it look a bit wider Also got the brake fluid changed so the pedal feel should hopefully be a bit better now Next things to do on it, do some messing around with the headlights, fit the front bumper when I eventually get it back from the paint shop, get a rear matching one, paint the roof rack strips oh and use the damn thing as a daily driver like I bought it for! MOT is up next month so lets hope that throws up no nasty surprises..

Stunning mate, you've took something that many would of overlooked for one reason or another and totally transformed it - and made it look effortless.

Very kind of you to say, cheers still needs quite a lot of detail work to get it to a point where I'll be really happy with it though And even then I'm thinking it could do with black leather and more power

What shocks and springs did you go for? The springs were just some random eBay jobs -40mm I think, and the shocks are OEM spec Sachs dampers It rides pretty well now, much more composed over bumps

Been following this for a while and enjoying the progress, car looks very nice. I love the stance it has now, I was hoping for something similar when I put lowering springs on my E30 but the front never looked low enough to me... great colour too, the only other colour I would've liked on my E30 was the dark (Malachite) green they came in! I look forward to seeing more progress!

I was worried about mine sitting a bit high on the front end still as I was having the new dampers put in but luckily its sat pretty much exactly where I want it which I'm pleasantly surprised by

Small update time. Got to fully utilise the load carrying capabilities of the 5 when helping my girlfriend move flat, did it all in one trip! haha Then it went for its MOT last week.. And unfortunately failed, but only on one issue which was some play in the nearside front ball joint so its back in the garage next week to have that sorted and it should have a clean bill of health

By far the best shape 5 BMW made, I had an e39 when I couldn't get one of these, never gelled with it though. Nice work on the MOT, just a balljoint is as good as a pass

Sport bumper should be resolved within a week.. should. Well the front one at least In happier news, got myself one of these 12 months advisory free The touring has also unexpectedly become my car for the Gathering, so some last minute prep will be ensuing tomorrow! Mostly I'll be trying to do a couple of things with the headlights and give the car a damn good clean! If I'm making exceptional progress, then the roof rails may get some attention too as they aren't very attractive at the moment, but I think I'd probably be better off waiting till after the gathering and sorting them properly
