Audi A8 D2
4.2 V8, 295 bhp
4-speed auto Quattro
Sport trim so well loaded with extras like the electric, heated leather Recaros, electric steering column, Climate control, sunroof (tilt and slide)
18" Alloys, sport suspension (low).
139k recorded. There is a fair bit of history, the original book from the early days stamped up to 52k, then a fair amount from 2008 onwards, but not enough to verify the mileage.
MoT to 4th May 2016
I've owned it since June 2015 - bit of an impulse buy to scratch a V8 itch! Wife hates it.... I've sorted a number of niggles out: All drains unblocked, new thermostat, breather pipes, oil & filter change, front O/S wheel bearing, track rod ends, rear suspension links and 4 wheel aligned. Electric windows and mirrors fixed. New AC condenser. I've done about 3k in it, including some long runs without any issues.
The good bits.
- Rumbling V8. Goes very well......
- Capable of near 30mpg on a run (also capable of scary low figures!)
- Early 4 speed car means gearbox failure is very much less likely
- Presentable
- Interior is pretty good. Lovely seats
- Good tread on all tyres incl. spare
- Plenty of life in brake pads and discs
- Most things work
- Battery (huge and v. pricey!) new last y.
The less good.
- Bodywork presentable, but not mint by any means. Seems to have had attention from various people of various talent levels over the years, though this appears to be more to address minor scrapes and possibly laquer peel than any big damage.
- A/C not working. Rather, it does work (and very well) when it has gas in it - but it doesn't hold gas for long. I've replaced the condenser which helped, but did not cure.
- Airbag light on. I've changed the sensor/ECU and one seat belt tensioner leaving one error code concerning the "warning light". This appears to indicate a problem with the instrument cluster or wiring which I've not been able to resolve so far. It apparently went through the last MoT on an advisory with the bulb out.
- Brake pad warning on. This is electrical as the pads are fine. (Common A8 foible)
-Possible wheel bearing noise. Not front right as I changed that, or could just be the less than wonderful budget tyres. sorted - was the tyres.
- Occasional clonk when engaging reverseand slight vibration at speed suggest that the propshaft centre bearing may need changing. new tyres sorted vibration.
- Assorted oil leaks, none very big.
-Has 245/40 18 tyres fitted when should be 245/45. Lowers the overall gearing so speedo over-reads. Tyres are crappy make but all match. sorted, new tyres.
I had planned to work through the remaining niggles and add lpg. However, my garage is now full of my sons Spitfire project (and likely to be for a long time yet) which makes working on it more awkward, it's a bit big for the lanes in these parts, plus SWMBO remains very against it.....
Would like around £ 900 but will haggle to some extent. Lot of car for the money.
