Hey folks. Me and a few mates are planning a Route 66 Road Trip. Has anyone here done it? Any tips, places that are a must see etc. Planning to spend 2 day in Chicago at the start. And 3 days in LA at the end. Staying at a hotel right on the beach.
Having had a quick look. We reckon a Ford Expedition or similar will be best bet. A 7 seater suv. As there is 5 of us going. This comes in about the £1600 mark for 21 days. With 4 drivers insured.
Flights should be about the £700 mark as well each.
So who's done what. And what's your recommendations.
Cheers.

There's not much of it left is there? I'm sure I've read somewhere that loads of it has gone in place of their 'freeways'

I drove the stretch from Kingman to Seligman last year when I was in Las Vegas. It's just short of 90 miles and I believe it's the longest continuous section left.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Great scenery, friendly people along the way, and a convertible Mustang so all good.
I can't comment on the other remaining parts but I'm sure they will be a great journey and I'd highly recommend that you go for it.

Good read - thanks for linking VadGTIOP Back in 2001 I did a small section of it but pictures I have are all on prints BD (before digital so not so easy to share) That write up reminded me why the sections I did seemed to start and end with little reason...... If you are going all the way to LA I would recommend skipping the last section of roue 66 and jumping up to san fran before taking the coast road (highway 1) from San Fran to LA - one of the best driving roads (one of - see note) I've found in the USA - scenery is great Note - with the exception of the tail of the dragon in Tennessee

Not 100% decided on what we are doing exactly. But it will come down to time as well. Not sure how much extra time will be added going up to San Fran.
