I wasn't sure where to put this, I'm modifying my life here......! At the moment, I'm driving a 1996 A4 avant. I want to come to the gathering 2016 and although I could probably sneak my car in as the club stand info requests predominantly pre 95, and it's only 1 year out, I think a stock avant isn't really what people would want to see at a retro car show. So I want to get another car that is pre 95 and come to the gathering. There's a snag. I have no spare money. Also I have just started an adult apprenticeship at 40 years old. Long term things are going great, in a years time I'll have a good job on decent money. But for now, on training wage, things are tight. So I thought I would see if I could sell all the stuff lying round my house that I don't need and don't use and see if it will add up to enough to get me a car for the gathering. I genuinely have no idea if anyone is interested in this, but here goes! First up, into the loft. I own a few guitars and have a couple of cases which I haven't used in over a decade. I looked around and prices vary like crazy, I thought roughly anything from £10 to £30 each. I put them on eBay and within no time a local guy offered me £50 for the pair. I said yes, and within a day he came and collected. Fund stands £50

I went back up into the loft and I have a couple of old motorbike helmets up there. I have a really cool Simpson bandit, same as The Stig wears on Top Gear, but I want to keep that as I had it airbrushed. I decided I would sell my old Valentino Rossi AGV helmet. It's replica of the one he wore at Imola, during the race he had his bike, leathers and helmet all done in the Italian flag colours. He even had his hair dyed 3 colours to match. I put this on eBay at £10 with no reserve. It was at least 15 years old and had many years of use when I bought it, so it had plenty chips and marks and all week it had no bids then eventually someone bid £10. I thought about stopping the auction but I decided to gamble it and let the auction run, in the end it sold for £45 so I was happy with that. Fund total £95

What a great idea for a thread. There are some ridiculously cool retro's on the cars for sale section for very little money. I often find myself wondering how long it would take me to star in one of those hoarders documentaries if only I had the money. Probably a good job I don't really!

Next to come down from the loft, hundreds of magazines. I started off with my classic and retro ford mags, and listed them on eBay, a year at a time, but they didn't sell. I tried listing them again in one lot, about 70 magazines, again no luck. In the end I put them on the oldskoolford website and got £20. I could have got more, some people sell them £5 an issue on eBay, but I just wanted them out of the way, I don't have time to sell them one by one. I still have a lot more car magazines and hundreds of motorcycle magazines to sort out. Total now £115

Excellent thread . I had to do the same due to extreme skintness with a new much lower paid job . I must admit i made a fair bit but had to deal with some real idiots [ wanting a unused £900 bike for £80 rather than £250 ]

How far from the gathering are you distance-wise? Will you buy sooner rather than later and get it sorted? Or will you just pick up the best you can afford with tax and mot a week beforehand and hope you make it?

How far from the gathering are you distance-wise? Will you buy sooner rather than later and get it sorted? Or will you just pick up the best you can afford with tax and mot a week beforehand and hope you make it? I'm about 3 hours from the gathering. I'm hoping to be sorted at least 1 month in advance. But I'd prefer to be sorted 2 months beforehand. I may get some money from work soon which will help out.

Unfortunately this idea has come to an end. My other thread in this room, diy camper van project has had a problem. It failed its mot and the bill came to £252. So that's wiped out almost all of the £275 I had saved up from this challenge. A bit sad, but never mind.
On the plus side, the camper project is going well, and if I hadn't had this £275 I wouldn't have had the money for the mot repairs. I could maybe bring my avant to the gathering, it's 1996 so only one year out from the 1995 what is retro decision.

What about taking the hit and get back to selling more stuff, have you got any old vinyl records around, some of them can do extremely well on ebay.
I love mk1 mr2's a mega rare supercharger with some even rarer mods, came up for sale near me just over a year ago, I'd just spent my piggy bank on a new mountain bike, the car was being offered to me at a substantial discounted price by an acquaintance. I borrowed the cash from my parents, so I sold my Iron Maiden vinyl record collection to pay them, it went mental on ebay, one record (a normal pressing uk issue album) sold for £256. I made a grand in a week, it did slow down but I payed them back within a few months.
I think this thread is an amazing idea, I knew some of my records had value, but it turned out some more so than I'd anticipated (understatement lol)
I say go full on balls out.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Funnily enough I have a fair bit of vinyl, and there's quite a few numbered limited editions and picture discs amongst the stuff I have. I haven't played any of it in years and there's probably quite a few quids worth. I do really need to add up and see if I can actually afford to run another car. When I started this thread a few months ago, my wages weren't too bad as I was still getting bonus payments from my old job. I'm on apprentice wage now and things are very tight indeed. I'll still keep clearing out and see how things go. If I get enough for a car then it'll be great, but if not I'll be qualified and on good money just after Xmas so I can get a car next year.

Well good luck with the apprenticeship. Seems like a great plan. As you say, there's always next year. I sold some of my old vinyl once to fund some bills, still hate myself a bit for doing it, but needs must and all that.

My dad and I did the same to fund the restoration of austin 7 #1, and while we technically didn't need to, it's amazing what you can turn up and what you can prioritise and what you can let go of when you have a goal in sight. Sold model trains and track, fishing gear, old cameras, motorbike restoration projects, old tools, and various other things built up over many years and turned up a right bit of money, which is in waiting for when we get back onto fitting the new body.
