Wow, wasn't expecting anyone to follow this. Thanks for your input guys and gals. So another evening shopping on a popular internet auction site saw two possible new tanks for the poor old girl (I know I can get this one welded up, but I'd rather pull the tub off, swap tanks, drop the tub back on and drive off - I'll patch this one up at a later date as a space/for sale) Option 1 - petrol tank £100 - Liverpool Option 2 - diesel tank £25 - Southend So I convinced the wife to come on a road trip to Essex and jumped in her nice shiny Honda CRV to pick up my filthy dirty diesel tank ? I'll give it a good flush then a wash&scrub up before I paint it in something hard wearing and rubbery. Added bonus is an original ford petrol cap and key as my current one is aftermarket. Whilst I was at it I made a cheeky cash offer on some Sierra cosworth recaros that he wanted £80 for. £50 saw me become the new owner of these:- Passenger looks great, drivers bolsters are shagged as usual - both need new bases but they can still be bought relatively cheaply. So what door cards do I do to match these? Or do I stick with the RS ones? Probably keep the RS as they are three door And in such good condition, I'll steal the runners off the cosworth seats for mine then patch them up and sell them on - I reckon I could swap the recliner mechanisms over and sell the passenger seat as a drivers for more than I paid. Gonna have to book some time off work and get on with this, I've got two 4 day weekends coming up and she's got plans for them both

Nice looking P100 there chap not many left nowdays Remember the pinto in these is low comp, you wont get the same results as you would with a normal comp engine If you fit the twincam you will need to sort the prop out as the MT75 doesn't use a sliding joint and you need one with a live axle, unlike the car where the diff is fixed to the body. Sorry if you know all this The heater on these it's usually like a furnace, it's made to heat a big empty estate so in that little cab it's usually overkill, might just need a flush? How is the fuel gauge? if it works go buy a lottery ticket, your in luck !!! I love the spares collection, it allways helps to have options DVLA records about 300 on the road, compared to 11k back in the early 90s I did now it was low compression, I plan to skim the head to try and get some back, do you know if they ran different Pistons? the twin cam is seied at present as along with creasing the chassis my lil bro took out the bottom of the rad and drove it home - it was still running at that point - it's currently got a bit of oil down the bores to see what happens? I'll be keeping the T9 with the pinto and live set up. The MT75 will come across with the 2.9 and the IRS set up later on. Fuel gauge is ford - reads full at the petrol station, empty with your foot down, but if you let up off the gas it is relatively accurate, although I did find driving round Swindon on one of my collection trips rather worrying with it sat in the read and was very relieved to finally find a petrol station, especially when I put 57 litres in the 60l tank! Did you visit the P100 breaker near the airport in southend? nice chap helped me out no end There's 6 P100s within a mile of me 2 campers and 4 trucks (inc mine) so i'm in good company lol Yes the LC engine used lower height pistons, skimming works just fit a vernia as the belt gets a bit slack though i guess you'll be fitting one anyway with a cam? That's about right for a P100 fuel gauge LOL, had 4 in mine and 3 senders, non worked all did the same thing i even changed the dash and voltage stabiliser twice and fitted an updated digital one (from Ford and supposed to fix the issue) still does it's own thing lucky there's room for a few spare fuel cans behind the seats

I've not seen another on the road in years. If I bought standard height pistons would they fit the LC block? I have bought a vernier to go on when the dam is done.

A few small jobs this weekend, the first being the replacement speedo cable. This was a nice easy job and whilst I was under the truck it appears that my temporary fix of the fuel tank is holding for now - I've got a week off soon, should be able to swap the tank over then. A quick check of the air filter resulted in me ordering a new one as it appears this was overlooked on the last owners service schedule. Whilst the filter housing was off I had a poke around the mechanisms and found the auto choke was sticking, a bit of oil and it's moving much more freely and now starting much better - bonus! The main job for the weekend was that when I bought the truck it was missing a few interior trims, most aren't a problem as they are interchangeable with the Sierra, so I have a choice of two of most things - except the headlining. Two reasons : both of mine are very poor, but mostly they have sun roofs and the truck doesn't. So a 200 mile round trip for a second hand one - £10! It's not as clean as the photos make it appear but it should clean up, or at least give me the base to recover. I took it out of the donor vehicle and fitted it straight into mine on the sellers driveway. At the same time I picked up the hardboard side and rear panels from him as I'm missing one - I will probably remake them all out of ply, but I now have the templates without having to remove the 3 I do have in the truck. I had hoped this would quieten down the cab, but I'm still missing half the carpet and factory sound deadening so it wasn't hugely effective - I will be removing the headlining and installing additional sound deadening under it. Half way home things got even noisier, on investigation when I got home it looks like my next item on the shopping list is an exhaust! The joys of a rolling restoration project.

Surely worth restoring the Sierra GLS, isn't it, if it's that stunningly easy to start after 10 years sitting outside?!

Surely worth restoring the Sierra GLS, isn't it, if it's that stunningly easy to start after 10 years sitting outside?! Part of me wants too, the other part says gut it and put the running gear in the pick up. The interior is pretty shoddy as a side window was broken so it's been open to the elements and had a huge wasp nest in it, sunroof has leaked and headlining is knackered. Also needs a bonnet and headlamps as my brother crashed it before it was parked up.

Replacing the petrol tank. So the tub came off - four man lift, damn its heavy! Removed old tank, it's peppered with around 20 pin prick holes in one spot. Cleaned and scrubbed the replacement tank - it has a hole too! Luckily just the one, so it's got a plastic washer and a self tapping screw in it, all topped off with milliput (brilliant stuff, sets rock hard, even under water and is petrol tight apparently, my uncle has repaired his heating oil tank and motorcycle petrol tank with it previously. Plenty of flaking paint and surface rust on the chassis but so far only one hole and it's about 5mm, can't really complain when it's a 25 year old ex work van. Out with the wire brush, as much as possible is coming off before I underseal the whole lot! Had planned to start on the interior with my week off, but this lots gotta be done whilst the tubs off and I've got all this access, so maintenance before modification.

Well all the flaking paint/rust/dirt is off and the underseal is starting to go on

Feck Dave thats looking nice an shiny! Thank you kind sir. Three days of hard graft, hopefully tomorrow will see the end of this little project and I can move into some nicer projects. I had hoped to start on the seats this week too, but where they have been welded in (very badly) there is a hole in the floor just above where the petrol was running down the chassis rail, so probably not the best idea to fire up the grinder and set the sparks flying!

If your ever thinking of going injection just fit a diesel tank comes with a swirlpot in it When i swapped mine to a TD tank somone had drained it by drilling 2 holes in the underside Grrr, welded it then skimmed with chemical metal, 5 years later not even a damp patch where the repair is (at my age NOT having a damp patch is a good thing) It's surprising how heavy the bead is aint it 2 trolly jacks with blocks of wood and leaving the rear on did for me (no friends you see) The seat mounts allways go first cos the reinforcing plate under the floor traps moisture and the rot sets in, PITA, that's the only place mines been welded (so far) I have mine in the yard for it's spring repaint (every 2 years) at the mo, waxoiling, service and MOT, it gets a yearly fettle then i don't have to touch it for a year, (uses about a Ltr of oil every 8K or yearly, better than 99% of my customers modern vehicals!!) which is a shame cos it means i have to underseal it yearly a nice oil leak does it for you as you drive great looking chassis you have there Ooo matron

So after pulling the bed off a couple of weeks ago to replace the fuel tank I had no rear lights - previously they'd been a bit hit and miss, but now not a single one. All fuses checked out so I suspected the wiring as there were some dodgy joints on show bypassing some of the original connector pins. Late last week I finally (only a 2week wait from Hong Kong, teaches me not to read the item location) replaced the original connector for a nice new 8way waterproof item (1 hole is not used so will be plugged with silicone sealant) I then removed the sub loom off the bed to make it easier to fit the new plug only to discover several areas of tape where repairs/modifications has been made. So today I stripped off all the old tape and found this! I'm surprised it ever worked - wires to nowhere, live wires wrapped into the loom, colour changes - some wires up to three times along the length of the loom! Multiple earths that where attached to the chassis - very annoying as it needs unbolting from the chassis to remove the bed or the sub loom removing from the bed - but none go to the left light cluster or to the main wiring harness. So I've just ordered some 7core trailer cable and will make my own sub loom with new connector into the main loom - I'll reuse the light cluster plugs if I have too but I've ordered some MG ones that look like they'll do the job and are in much better condition. At least then I'll be able to test the wiring on the bench - I will probably connect some spare lights and bulbs to it too - to prove it all works before putting it back on the truck and continuing to fix the problem as I have a suspicion this won't cure all the problems. Really very annoying as I had to use my wife's car to collect a motorcycle at the weekend which involved pulling the engine and wheels out to make it fit, if the truck was working I could have wheeled it straight up the ramp and tied it down.
