Why not? Personally I like it. So, where are you taking an orbital sander to your XR4i? I took an orbital sander to my old Volvo 480 Turbo! Looked like a sack of sh!t, but went like the clappers! It made me happy As it happens I would not have want to damage the bodywork on my old XR4i or my current GLSi. But it's the owners choice, same as if he had painted it Kawasaki green and covered it with a massive body kit! However I do quite fancy doing a rat look sierra (time and money prohibits) anyone got a pic of that rat look astra estate in spain? I love that car!

I like it. I've taxed worse.... Had a humber sceptre that looked like that a way back, had a transit DI under the hood cos it was a rescued donor car that otherwise would have been scrap. Never got dipped for red, either Most of my vehicles end up rat look anyway due to a combination of hard use, neglect cosmetically and downright clumsiness in the yard It's not deliberate, but I'm a scrapman with a dog...

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

The "built in" problem I have with this rat look is that coming from Scotland, cars rusted quickly enough without any additional effort. A prepared rat look car in Scotland would probably be in the scrappy the following year as it would have actually fallen to bits due to the corrosion

Doesn't look rat, just looks like a peice of junk that would probably infest anyone who touched it with a nasty case of the clap.

It had spent 10 years on the seafront in Exmouth, I don't think I have ever seen a more rusty car. Worst of all the owner described it as being in "good condition for year" if the year was 23 BC then maybe!!!!!!!!!

"good contintion for year" for anything over 10 years old, on the law of averages, just means its not been recycled as razer blades or something.
I tried mainitinaing my Buick as a car with Patina, now I'm looking at a car which needs significant restoration to stop it being banger fodder or a donor car.
I wonder how many of these rat cars are just enjoying one last blaze of fashionable glory before scrapping?

I wonder how many of these rat cars are just enjoying one last blaze of fashionable glory before scrapping? That or burning round shows for a year before being restored/modified. Things like the Linde bus were already restored underneath, just the original body work left on. I hope there are more ratters out there like that than those just doing a lap of the shows before heading for the scrappy. I'd love to know more of the story of this Merc though... looks like it definatly came from a scrappy, and arguably probably still deserves to be there.

I wonder how many of these rat cars are just enjoying one last blaze of fashionable glory before scrapping? That or burning round shows for a year before being restored/modified. Yah, tru dat. I have known many people (myslef included) who have driven around in unfinished cars. Either for the crack of driving it or becaue its all that runs... My ol Prefect as an example... drove it like this and this and this and this and technically it still wasn't "finished".... However, I have deep gnawing suspicion that a lot of these rat look vehicles are "built" not by people who just haven't got round to the paint yet, but by people who lack the skill or knowledge or inclination to build a decent car and find "rat look" a convenient get out to have a "cool" car. Because a car isn't shiny and finished doesn't mean its a crapper. Because a car is rusty and battered doesn't make it cool.

Very nice prefect there AK, although I am slightly disappointed it did not wear slot mags Anyway I would image a lot of hood ride and rat look cars don't last very long. I agree with Hotwire, but I would image that alot of them do a year or so going to various show and then get sent to the scrappy. I have to say I am guilty of sending the majority of my cars to the scrap yard, I only wish I could have the space, time and money. I would like to run two cars (a daily and a resto), have a garage and have a less demanding girl friend!
