Autos are great, especialy if coupled with super light power steering so you can drive with your arm hangin' out of the window....... ;D
Seriously, I like them. I've had 3: a Triumph 2500 TC, a Morris Ital 2.0 HLS (for a week.....) and a MK1 Cavalier 2.0. I suppose it's horses for courses really...... they're great if you do a lot of driving in traffic, not so great if you like throwing you car round the lanes.......

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Auto boxes are just fine. My Volvo is definately a cruiser and auto. Mind you, hanging on to any of the 4 gears works well. The shift from 1 to 2 at 5000rpm is like a kick in the rear!
Manuals are better in little thrashy engined cars where you can drive them like the Stig all day!
The sun's out, power windows down, tunes on, arm on door top (4" wide on the Volvo) and autobox doing the work. Alternatively, it;s freezing outside, your heater fan has packed up along with the heated seats so you can sit on one hand at a time to keep it warm! Must fix things........

My Javelin's got a 4 speed manual and that's handled some serious torque (the car's run mid 11's in the past). I'm pretty sure it's the original box too. It has some serious badass clutch on it too... not the sort you can hold down whilst stopped in traffic unless you use both feet ;D
The gearboxes used in Nissan 200SX's will handle a 400bhp motor without any trouble and the skyline boxes a bit more. I don't think any of the Nissan autos will handle as much as the decent manuals they make. You only really need to start looking to aftermarket gearsets or gearboxes above about 600bhp, although above 500 the lifespan of a standard box is much shorter. I have never ever heard of a Nissan box going bang. Worn synchros yes, but not complete failures.
Nissan equipped the first gen 300ZX turbo with a T5 and they are rumoured to be complete junk compared to Nissan own 'boxes ironically. I guess they figured a T5 would be better for the turbo model.

My father hates autos with a passion, and the only reason there is an automatic Ford Falcon in the shed is that there is also a manual gearbox wiating for me to stick it in. I necer got to hear the end of it after I bought an automatic Peugeot 604, I still get stick over that car to this day and I haven't had it for ages. I much prefer manuals, but I am pretty ok with autos. I would not pass up the opportunity of owning something really special that only came with autos, but if it came in manual too, jor if manual box is an easy fit, I would take that option, even in big cruisers etc. Our Transit with the big six has a manual, despite having a pig of a gearchange position. That is going to be fixed soon, maybe witha remote cable shifter, but it is definately NOT geting an auto in it! Manuals rule!

Agree with the concensus really. In a big comfy barge you can't beat an Auto. We had a Toyota Previa when we did the three peaks (US style column shifter) and the auto box along with the armrests gave very comfortable cruising.
But when I see a 911 and still get a little pang of exitement (kid that I am) I'm always dissapointed to hear the dullness of the Tiptronic box. "You only bought it as a pose"
For ultimate control a manual is the only way to say "I'm going too quick but don't want to lift off mid bend - I want third now, NOW!" Not when the switchomatronic decides.
