What gas are you using? I'd start there are the black around the weld and pot marks in it look like their is no gas shroud working around the welding.
It it proper welding gas of have you got it on Co2. If Co2 is it pure or is it a pub gas bottle? Most of the pub Co2 bottles have started adding another gas to it (can't remember what) but it now doesn't work for welding and just pops bangs and makes a mess.
If its pure Co2 or an Argon mix then turn the flow up more, too high a flow will not hurt the weld but too low can.
Your BOC welded should be more than enough for the job if its working right. If you doubt the power supply you have can you take the welder to the mot station and plug into their supply just to try it.
