Comments like that make me laugh. My parents own a classic car and they have no idea how many get nicked simply because they don't use the Internet.
It seems that it's only being brought to light through forums or Facebook, so I'd guess that the majority of older owners wouldn't have a clue either. So you never told them then........... That's an argument weaker than milky tea. All the cars on here, with the very odd exception, have been owned by people that are fully aware of the value, at the very least. I'm over 50 and own classic cars so how old do I need to be to not have a clue? That's a massively disparaging statement to 'older owners.' I suppose if you are in your 70s you have never heard of t'internet or ever bought motoring publications.
What do you think the elderly do? Sit in their own wee?? That generation is one of the key drivers of our hobby, they are building cars on here and charging around the country in Rover P4s and Austin Healeys. They are the generation with the time and disposable income and the hobby needs them. Your parents are in a small minority, your assertion holds no water. The vast majority are also VERY computer literate, I know that for a fact. They are sharper than we are!
I havnt told them no, the car lives in an alarmed garage attached to the house and gets driven maybe 3 times a year, one of those times is to its MOT. It's not an ageist comment at all, I didn't say that people COULDN'T use the Internet, I just said they didn't. My parents have an iPad, do they use it? Not very often, they're usually out doing things with their lives, not like me spending my time refreshing "cars for sale" every 15 minutes! Of all the people I know who are of their age or older, I'd say it's pretty much a 50/50 split between those who are active online and those who are not. Suprisingly enough, some people actually want to do things rather than gawp at Facebook all night. But continue telling me that me own experience is wrong, I'm sure it will return the missing Anglia.

How do you know the chap with the green anglia hadn't done something? Do you know that he didn't have a modern parked in front of it? Or a post at the end of his drive? Do you know for sure that it didn't have a disklock on it when it was stolen? Genuine questions He could have, that's true. Honestly? My job ive done for 26+ years has taken me to something like 75,000+ homes, I can now look at a front door and know exactly whats behind it, the people that live there, the lot. Some of the dirtiest homes have been mansions, the cleanest, council flats. Cars on driveways, cars parked on front gardens with grass growing beyond sill height, ive seen it all. That Anglia? Hmmm, maybe it does have a post infront of it ( no suggestion it had to be lifted over ) and maybe the axle was chained and anchored to a point on the drive behind it. It just doesn't LOOK like its been cared for, held in regard, cherished or desired even though the engine spec screams petrol head. I will apologise profusely if ive misread the signs.
Genuine questions. Can you honestly say that people, per se, really do enough to protect their assets? Do you truly believe that finding your Classic pinched from a lock up that you haven't visited for months is really going to be found when the owner hasn't a clue exactly when it was taken? That's happened. If you wouldn't leave £5K in £20 notes in a lock up for months on end without checking its still there, let alone on your driveway unsecured why leave a £5K classic car when it seems that the car is equally as easy to make disappear?
So basically you are just assuming that the owner hasn't put any effort into securing it, and then made negative comments about him based on your assumptions, purely because you've been to lots of houses? I have a council lock up, atm it's full of a random car curse word I've collected over the years waiting to be auto jumbled off. For most of the time I've rented it I've had a number of classic/retro stored in it for varying amounts of times. Many times they have been left unchecked for long periods if time, is it ideal? Not really, but unfortunately life rarely is. With life, work and family commitments I barely get 2 minutes to myself, never mind time to regularly pop round and check on the lock up. I guess I should just give up the lock and give up owning classics because I can't store them in a secure lock up (which still hasn't stopped thieves from having them away). Maybe that's the only real way we have of not becoming victims of car theft, sell up ajd buy something boring and modern.

Heres an idea, lets get back to topic!
Although I am intrigued at 75,000 plus homes in 26 years, with no holidays and a 5 day week that means over 11 houses a day, and judging by your remarks that different houses also and not the same like for example a Postman?
Take into account Holidays and that number increases!
ANYWAY
As often stated before, if an individual wants to steal something they will go to great lengths despite what we all do or don't do, its a fact of life and the world we live in today. 26 years ago we use to leave our doors open and cars unlocked and they would be fine as people worked hard for what they wanted, sadly times and mentalities have changed.
Unfortunately a lot of people still have the 'It won't happen to me' attitude which 'may' account for the lack of security people take.

Basically, yes and its not lots, its tens of thousands. You strike me as a pretty intelligent and articulate guy, tell me please where there was any clue as to that car being secured to any degree whatsoever when it doesn't even appear to have had even a basic car cover invested in it. Seriously, do the sums! Its become a habit of posts being put up of cars stolen and people have started to get the tea out and tut tut. You, yourself, have attempted to make your cars/parts more secure but take issue with me because I dare to suggest that many others haven't? We seem to live in a nation where we are no longer responsible for anything, its not our fault, no blame must be attributed, nobody need do anything. Many of these cars haven't been stolen by geniuses or major league criminals, they have been stolen by pushing the cars onto the road and onto a low loader or trailer, its taken a few minutes, easy peasy. It doesn't matter whether the criminals are one step ahead of the rest of us or not, they are when it comes to a whole host of illegal acts. How many people keep their pin numbers with their bank cards, don't lock doors on their way out and the like. My original point still stands, some people have made efforts to reduce the risks, hasn't always worked but they had a damn good go and some just haven't bothered at all. A tiny percentage of those really were not aware of the values and stealability but most had a good idea. Strangely, Ive just spoken to my best friend, shes a solicitor and not a petrol head. I, in passing, mentioned the lifting of this Anglia and she said 'Oh, a Harry Potter car, that must be worth a few bob..' Old cars, antiques, the perception of value is known by many yet the perception of security is known by few, or so it seems. Locking horns about my assumptions is fine, its actually about time the way we secure cars has been discussed more vigorously than it previously has, maybe, just maybe it will spark some people into thinking a bit more and a bit harder about how secure their car actually is. A good thing, right? Its not like I'm waving the flag for the scum that thieve, my views are quite legitimate, some of the counter responses are also legitimate and some are just p*ss poor excuses made to maintain the myth that no potential victim can do anything whatsoever to make it more difficult to be that victim. There are some seriously clever people here, maybe they could come up with some theft deterrent?

My two penneth I'm an engineer and, without wanting to, have ended up being able to work out 'who lives in a house like this? Ive also been lucky to see loads of cars locked away by proud owners, not known to Joe Public and the like. That's another thing, cars disappearing from garages, who and how do people know they are there? It cannot be pure chance that, one day, the garage is open and a scum bag spots it and things 'I'm going to take that' Must be the odd 'inside job' or three. Maybe.

I have a mk2 escort in my lock up that is only 20 minutes bike ride from me.I do not go and look to see if its ok everyday I think the point is that there is scumbags out there that would rather nick a classic car.instead of putting there own money and time in to a car the owner of the of the car was on holiday.even if he did do something to stop them the scumbags would have found a way of taking it as they know he was not going to be there for a bit.instead of moaning about it help unlucky owns who have had there car stolen by keeping your eyes open on the internet forums ect.

What I really wont do is put myself out when people cant be arsed to make the effort themselves. I just hope that Anglia gets found in one piece, it deserves to live.

Zeb you didn't mearly "suggest" people secure their cars better tho did you? You assumed there was no effort put into securing the anglia, and then made a very uncalled for comment about it being taken seemingly based on that assumption.
But it's done, arguing the toss about that isn't going help find the anglia, and this thread has gone way off topic so let's leave it at that shall we?

Dumbass thing to say , the owner can do what they want with it . Its ' ' and, yes, of course he can. He can also leave it completely unprotected, unlocked and easy enough for a child to enter and steal. As much as id be happy to take an axe to the hands of thieves, this page is brimming with lifted cars that have had virtually no theft deterent whatsoever. I'm sure that block paved drive could have had a metal post and lock put in, may not have stopped it but the noise of removal would have alerted people. Maybe. Yes cars should be safe from theft but they have never been and never will be. Owners need to take greater responsibility. This is like saying a girl deserves to be raped if shes wearing revealing clothes. The taking of someone elses property whether its in a secure cctv car park or in the street,is theft, regardless. Does it make it less of an offence if the car is less protected? No. You cant blame the owners. What is everyone supposed to do,put them in fort knox and never ever get them out. In my opinion, this site itself is a perfect hunting ground for thieves, who often say things like 'It deserved to be stolen' Be carefull people don't start pointing the finger at you.
