This is the story of a teardrop I made a couple years back from curse word lying around Ive been thinking about making one of these for a while I'm making it in my spare time using reclaimed wood windows ally and chassis from scrap caravans so in theory it wont owe me anything and I wont feel the need to sell it also it wont take up much room in the workshop Its going to be pretty basic This is where its at

we sell the steel AL-KO chassis whole so Ive been waiting for an axle from an aluminium AL-KO chassis they are always always snapped and nobody wants them we normally have a few axles lying about and they get weighed in but ive been waiting a month for one to turn up This morning there was a swift corniche sat on this its a bit rusty its kinda overkill its plated at 1200kg and braked I'm thinking the tear-drop is going to be about 200kg when finished so I gave it a going over with the wire brush wheel to get it free from rust n crud And Painted

Made the frame tonight I bought the angle iron couldn't be bothered climbing the scrap pile in the scrap yard cleaning it all up to save £20 the box section draw bar was robbed off an old static and the brand new tow hitch was found in a scrap caravan I think I will put a hand brake on it and some stabilizer legs The body will sit 100mm lower than this and I may add some4 side skirts yet

I bolted and welded the axle on then painted the chassis red is just what I had it will never be seen its just to stop it rusting Then bolted the ring beam on the floor will be attached to this then the walls screw in to it Then a plastic sheet is stapled on Then the insulation goes on the plastic is to hold this in place and to stop the floor getting wet Then the ply

Not really done a lot due to being lazy but got the tow hitch / jockey wheel bolted on and started framing the roof If I were to clad it in wood I would buld up / laminat the edge of the roof to about 50/70mm using strips of thin ply then put a radius on to that so the eges are not boxy looking maybe next time eh this one is going to get clad in ally i think

Ive been toying with what to do with the door As you can see by the appearance and disappearance of the black rubber my mate who I work with keeps saying why didn't you just use the top half of a caravan door well that would be clean tidy and way easy BUT I'm tall and big boned lol a stock caravan door is about 500m wide and about 1650mm high the top half around 800mm tall this would make it difficult for me to get in and out so I made mine as tall as I could 900mm and 650mm wide Anyway I thought abot lots of ways to trim and seal the door but settled on this I cut up a door and frame I straightened ot the curve on one side of the frame and rebent it to my needs I was aiming to make it all one peice but ended up in three it gets 3 different rubber trims around it

I wanted to use old fasioned hub caps I have a few sets off scrap caravans but the AL-KO axle I used has a different pcd to the b&b wheels I have to suit these caps so I needed a way of mounting the caps to these wheels I have a pair of alloy wheels that would fit but really did not like the look so heres what I did Ive never done this before so a little trial and error but I'm now confident they will stay put I measured the hub cap and the wheel put a couple of pencil marks in the right place while it was still attached to the axle then I jacked it up a little put the axle stand next to it with a pencil on in the right place to meet the original pencil mark the turn the wheel holdin the pencil dead steady and whalla you have a circle perfectly round and in the right place first I tried the easy way drilled 4 holes and put in some self tappers that didnt work because once the lip of the cap was over the screw head there was play in it not good also they actually trapped the cap on and the force needed to get it off snapped the screw The original wheels have tabs stamped in to them to hold the caps on so decided to copy that by welding tabs on to the wheel Once stuck on these can be adjusted with a hammer till there just right them painted
