Yes, I'm not a complete novice, I've competed for a few years, mainly in classic stuff (my Skoda S100, gf's K series Mini, Austin Allegro, etc) so I know the score.
Just looking for cheap speed options for next year.

I guess you will be looking at either below 1400 or 2000cc N/A?
Clio is hard to beat power/weight ratio wise in the 2 liter class. If you can find like an older Civic VTI that will offers good performance. There is also a Toyota Celica VVTI with a 1.8 an 190hp, might be just out of budget though. Problem with the MGF/TF is their lack of width, so ultimately they can't corner as quickly as some other cars.
1400 Class would be a 106 or a 205. A more modern potential candidate could be a Lupo/ Arosa with the 1.4-16V engine.
Pistonheads were surprisingly quick in new Audi S8 on Shelsey Walsh, so a big barge can be an option.
I just started hillclimbing on Prescott in a MX5 NC 2.0 which is more expensive and slower than a Clio 182, but still hugely good fun. So you might just use what you got.

106 GTI wont come near a grand, Saxo VTS most definitely will. I've got mine to around 700 kg and 172 bhp so it should be pretty decent 106 GTI are getting pretty cult now & strong money. You can, however, pick up a 106 RALLYE for <£1K if you keep your eyes peeled for what's about. 100bhp+ in standard form, they're very light cars anyway but there's still stuff that'll strip out to bring the weight down.

I didn't even bother searching for GTI as I hadn't appreciated that you could buy the tatty end cars this cheaply, there are a few out there for <£1K It's an extra 20 horses over the Rallye! 106 GTI's

Replying on my phone here so quotes are a bit of a struggle. However.
Can someone please tell me if there is any differences, apart from the obvious external ones, between the GTi and VTS? I thought they were effectively the same. If so why such a cult following on the 106? I always fancied one in sundance yellow myself.
I've also always liked the S1 rallye but didn't realise they fell into sub 1k category. The 1.3 gearboxes are well regarded aren't they?

Some under the skin differences I believe, shocks, arb size possibly. Its irrelevant really because your best off ripping it all out and putting it in an Ax, instantly saving a 100+kg

Whereas a grand will get you a strong Saxo. I paid 2 grand for mine just over 4 years ago with the intent of a cheap track car, 4 years and 10k+ later its gotten a bit out of hand, the roof cost almost as much as the car!

Motorsports ain't for people with shallow pockets! (Except for banger racing). Even banger racings not cheap now. Tuned engines and sticky tyres are all the rage. Drivers are known to of spent thousands on engine builds.

Seeing as you've mentioned a Metro with engine conversion can you do the same thing with a Citroen Ax and either a VTR or VTS conversion?

Clios are curse word easy to work on yourself. I did the head on mine in less than a day. Even a munted one won't be "too far gone" as they generally don't rust. Entire VRS kit, new belt kit including dephaser cost me less than 300 quid delivered, no point paying some shmuck 375 just for a dephaser. A sorted Clio Sport will literally run rings around anything else listed here, the only other alternative would be an MX5, and they're all rusted in that price bracket.
Loads of already race prepped Clios for sale too, save money on converting one yourself etc
You'd have 5 grand into an LS400 or Saab 9-3 just to make it keep up with a stock Clio around a track, let alone prepped Clio, and once you consider you can get off the shelf roll cages and stuff for the Clio... well it just gets cheaper the further on you go.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the 306 GTi-6 yet. Cheap as chips and in my opinion a faster car than the clio 182. Yes on paper it has less power but that 6 speed box is so close and keeps the engine singing. Excellent handling car too, mine ran rings round much more powerful cars on track days and that was a standard car.

Nice thing about hill climbing is that you compete against the time and for a novice a lot of time can be gained by improving the driver.
Looking at the 2 liter Group N touring car championship you will find the Clio doing fine too. But cars like the IS200, BMW E36/e46 and Alfa 156 were also winning cars. Although these are very modified cars.
But what could one do with a rwd family saloon car with tuned (Megasquirt, Cams, Bike itbs) 2 liter straight six? A bit heavier, but better balance with a wider stance. Maybe a bit more power than a Clio? You could always throw a short ratio diff in it.
Or a Primera P10 with a modified SR20DE? Or a Vauxhall Cavalier mk3 with a fruity CX20XE engine?
Otherwise a fun weird one could be a Jaguar XJR6/8 or some german saloon/estate with a V8. Will be off course above the 2 liter category which is normally dominated with 4wd turbos, but I quite like the idea. Not the bill for the tires, though.
