If you were on the roads approaching Goodwood for Festival of Speed you might expect to see quite a few spectacular cars passing you, although most of the really exceptional ones would probably be safely cocooned in their trailers. Similarly if you attended a larger car show you wouldn't be surprised to see some amazing cars on the surrounding roads but what about the rare occasion when you see an automotive superstar in totally incongruous surroundings? My all-time amazingly out of place spot was about 15 years ago near Llantrisant, (a small town in South Wales). I was waiting for lights to change at a junction when an enormous open-topped 'Großer' Mercedes Benz 770 sped through the junction; the number plate was a foreign one, I assumed German, the driver looked distinctly Germanic. My jaw had barely had time to hit my floorpan when a second and a third 770 swept across the junction in front of me. I don't have any idea where they could have been heading, the road they were on led into the Rhondda valley. Perhaps they wanted to see what slagheaps & deprivation looked like close up? There weren't very many 770's built and most survivors are with museums, this model is most notoriously associated with the Nazi party high command. There can't be many in private hands & I imagine it would be difficult enough to rustle up 3 to take on tour? As far as value is concerned in today's money these 3 cars could have a collective value in excess of £5 Million. For anyone who's not familiar with this model here is a random pic off the internet; So anyone seen a Bugatti Royale outside the local chippie or a Ferrari California Spyder in the LIDL car park?

Spotted this in B&Q Llandudno a couple of years back. Wouldn't have been too auspicious only the guy didn't go in for a screwdriver, he came out with 7 or 8 bags of cement, and threw them in the boot as if you would a 10 year old escort van. I wasn't the only person watching in disbelief

Also I'm referring to the Aston, not the crappy Astra which has had more than a few bags of cement flung in it

I wasn't the only person watching in disbelief I wonder if you can buy a roof-rack for an Aston Martin? Circa 1990 I was looking for a new classic, I think my top budget at the time was about £12K. There was a DBS in the Exchange & Mart week after week, it was described as driving, MOT'd but scruffy at £14K ono. I contemplated taking out a loan to top up my cash but decided against it, I'm still kicking myself quarter of a century later.

Filling up with fuel at M4 services near Reading few years ago in my < mad max > style jeep when a Koenigsegg super car pulls on to forecourt. Chap gets out to fill it with fuel and is stood looking at my 8k project ( priceless ) when he owned a super car. To be fair never heard of a Koenigsegg till i got home and googled it. Goes to show maybe the really rich folk love a modified retro after all ? Generic photo of a Koenigsegg as had no camera with me

I used to live in a little village in Bucks called Worminghall, just outside the village there was a small industrial estate, I think there was some sort of historic race car restorer there, used too occasionally see exotica, leaving or going there, I saw x2 Lamborghini Miura's a gold colour one and a red over gold sv, not at the same time, but more often I used to see old bugattis, hooning it up a down I'm assuming on shake down runs, but I also remember being overtaken by a huge machine, dark red loud as curse word and basically a giant cigar with wheels, but oh my God was it loud. No idea what it was but amazing doesn't cut it.

A few years back, probably mid 90's I remember being on holiday and visiting a local town for supplies. As we entered the carpark there was a big black Austin 3 litre limo. It was, and i guess still is, the holy grail of cars for me. Both me and Dad were all over it. Its one of those moments I can remember like it was yesterday. Ive got a picture somewhere.

50% retro spot at the top of the Col de Turini in France this may . A collection of alpines and three veyrons . There was a black sport line transporter which the factory had sent out as a spotter car to go up in front of the veyrons to check for traffic but the van driver told me he didn't have to try very hard to stay in front . We followed them back down for a couple of miles but they weren't going to let anyone past so let them go for a few minutes but still ended up behind them at the bottom .

I saw a Bugatti Veyron stuck in traffic heading into Swansea, still wondering who it was as I don't think any local footballers earn enough to drive a Veyron. To see 3 in a line is pretty special!

They looked pretty convincing if they were. Film props? Hadn't occurred to me, we get all sorts of stuff filmed across Wales but I'm not aware of any film or programme which would fit the bill. The 'Valleywood' studio isn't far from where I spotted them but it wasn't built then. I'd have thought your GT40 was pretty likely to be a replica? (The Hillman is fairly likely to have been a real one).

I've got a couple. First was driving to Wales for Christmas a couple of year's back, we're on the M4 heading towards Reading. Now we keep an eye on the road when travelling at Christmas for the person that can see the most 'christmas' car, packed with stuff so you can't see out the back window, preferably with wrapped presents visible, nanna squeezed into the rear seat surrounded by stuff, turkey tray visible perched on top of something. So I spend a lot of time scanning the roads looking for these things. Which is why I noticed going in the other direction a white Aston Martin DB4 race car, full roll cage, roundels on the doors, looking amazing, packed with luggage in the rear. Brilliant. Like this one : It could even have been that one. Next spot was also an Aston Martin. Heading down the A303 towards Somerset and I see one of these going in the other direction: I nearly crashed the car I was so excited. And finally, and I suspect related to the previous spot. I go past a restoration place on the A303 every time I head to London. This place in fact : www.mitchellmotors.co.uk/Usually at the weekends when it is shut. Last year when I went to take my Datsun to Horsham Developments I went past and this was parked outside : I turned the car around and went back to have a look ... they even opened the door so I could check the inside out (which is much plusher than I expected). Amazing stuff.

I recently replied to another thread on a similar lines with... I love it hen you see things like this, photos or not. Call me a sad chap, but it brightens my journey and makes it a bit more enjoyable. Recently I got passed at a fair rate of speed on the M25 by a XJ220. I never even knew there were road legal ones in the UK, I drove the hour home with my jaw in my lap. Following on from this I searched about XJ220s in the uk and found quite a humble photo.

Early 90s computer games gave me the desire for one of those . It just smacks so much of that period .

I sent them a C.V years ago and heard nothing back , miserable buggers .

I think an XJ220 must be amongst my most unexpected too... Like a shark in my rear view mirror, I kept catching glances of it about five cars back on the motorway and then it finally took aaaaaaages creeping past me with about 2mph speed difference in a long stretch of 50mph average speed cameras.
