Lymm is not so far from Birkenhead and a few hours on Stena Line to Belfast. The car could already be in Ireland, the last vehicle check might well indicate that.

Hi, I don't think the checks have been used to locate the car, I think the car was stolen around the time of the first check and then offered around.

The times do not tally up though . It has been nicked in the last few weeks and the dealer checks are over a period of 3 months ....

It could be another 'Well the car was there when I last checked in 2008..' thing. Sorry to go there but, again, cars are left for LONG periods of time, go missing and the owner cannot narrow down the time it was taken even down to a week. Makes locating it damn near impossible. Maybe its a possibility that there is more to this story than has been told? Its not going to be the first time thats happened... .....or its had regular checks done by the thieves to see if its showing up as stolen yet? That last check would possibly establish that the car is in Ireland??? No? Ok.

Does the o.p know if its been up for sale recently ? Sounds odd ? If it hasnt then what can someone get from the hpi check , and how would they know the vehicle number unless they have access to some sort of dvla type system ? That would give the registered keeper and cars location . That's been my conspiracy theory for a while, thieves have tapped up an insider working at DVLA for info of car locations. Some of the cars stolen, Classic Fords & Land Rovers are either parked miles out of the way or haven't been on the road for some considerable time. Info would either gave to come from the owner themselves, friends of the owner or from someone with access to the info such as DVLA.

Insiders have been identified before. Last big one was a guy removing points for the right fee.

pm'd you escort mad, sorry ive not repied the the thread guys didnt realise there was so much response on here. both me and the owner appriciate all the help. to answer a few questions the car was stored in a lockup garage a mile from the owners home so don't think the reg documents would lead anyone directly to the garage. he last checked it was there august before he went away for a few weeks. on returning to the country he was contacted by the owner of lockup to say someones broken in and looks like they have taken a car.
according to a very elderly eye witnes the car was taken on a white truck he cannot give any more details than that unfortunatly. the car had been hidden away for the last 10 years. my suspision is someone had got in garage seen it and then offerd it about for sale. maybe after finding a buyer they went back and took it.
any info is gratefully recived even if it may seem insignificant at the time. also the car was reported stolen to the police as soon as the owner realised it had gone.

I'm trying to help a mate out get his car back. I have gatherd enough info from him to in my opinion quickly identify the car.Like i said if someone spots a unrestored yellow mexico somewere that wasnt there 3 months ago please let us know. There are other less obvious details that would also identify the car further but it would be silly to list them online where the thief could read about them and remove them wouldnt it? I don't think there will be many unrestored yellow mk1 mexicos about these days so if somone spots one please let us know.

My two pence worth.. anyone working for a car insurance co. knows where nice cars are hidden , just from giving a quote .
"And where's the car kept?"
" Oooh i have it hidden away from prying eyes at tv44 xx2 !! "

Probably not insured . If its a block of garages you get , ahem certain sorts driving about looking for scrap . If a place looks neglected , has windows or a ill fitting door its not hard for someone to have a peek . Even if it is covered with a sheet and you know your cars its easy to identify it . May have thought it was just a old car they could weigh in and realised they struck gold .

May have thought it was just a old car they could weigh in and realised they struck gold . yes that is the likely scenario, the owner was very carefull who he told about even owning the car. problem is if you go mad with security on the garage it would attract even more undesirables to have a look. i would say one of the local scum has spotted it and told someone its there. I cant imagaine organised classic car gangs traveling around the county looking in every lockup. although i may be wrong. either way he is understandably very upset to have lost the car.
