Quick photo a couple of hours into the stripping. Just the one for now as I'm on my phone. Found a few more hidden nasties, but on the whole nothing too terrible or scary. There are a few signs that this was once a well-loved and cared for car. That was, however, a VERY long time ago!

Found a couple more bad bits, but overall pretty pleased with the overall condition of the shell.
Apart from a hole in the corner of the bulkhead, everything else appears to have been caused by horrific bodges by a previous owner.
Someone has jacked the car up in the middle of the floor and creased it, but that can easily be thrashed out.
It's gone into holes around the fuel filler as it had been stuffed with mesh and sealer and what looks like wet cardboard. Whoever has worked on the car before clearly cannot weld or paint. Wherever there has been welding done it is only tacked in and then stuck (very badly) with silicone.
The spare wheel well has had a repair stuck on with silicone, which water has got behind and rotted out.
The good news is that it hasn't had a massive amount of previous welding, so not too much rubbish work to undo. I would say that for the first 10 years of its life, the car would have been well cared for, but ever since it has just been neglected and someone has attempted bodge repairs to keep it on the road/get it back on the road. If they would have been done to an anywhere near decent standard in the past it would have been a well-preserved example as 90% of the untouched areas are very solid and clean.

My biggest motoring regret is getting rid of my MG Turbo, I really got to love it but I couldn't drive it normally ( boot to the board every time) and I had for 5 years, apart from eating front wheel bearings and going through front tyres every 2500 miles it was faultless. Good luck with this and well done for doing it.

My Dad had 4 Montegos, all estates. I loved them. I remember all of the dealer brochures and tried in vain to get my Dad to buy an MG Montego saloon, but we always had estates. I was very jealous of my mate at school as his parents had a black MG Montego saloon with the talking dash!

Cracking car, we raced a 2.0 Montego in the 1990's in the MG Owners Club championship. Maestro door fit these too, although they will probably be rotten too by now.

Maestro front doors fit, but don't have the little pins on the top for the trim. Rears are different. Well, the door bottoms are the same, but the frames are different.
The guy with the Maestro we painted on page 1 had the last drivers door in the world and that was a Montego door, which we ground the pins off.

I think they went on to make a Maestro Montego hybrid in China. I'm not sure what the panel availability is like though.

This is now a bare shell ready for the blasters to do their thing.
Found a few holes and ripe bits, but nothing too drastic. As long as the blasting doesn't open up anything else that's too horrendous I'll be relatively happy overall.

Not much more to report at the moment. I've cut the sills and rear arches off ready for blasting and have had a parcel from Holland containing more parts (A complete back panel, two new tail lights and new rear door seals. There was no bootlid reflector panel in there as they're having difficulty locating it in their warehouse, but I'm assured that it's in there somewhere and will be with me as soon as they find it).

Well, I can report some progress of sorts sooner than expected!
I have just bought a Rover 218i S (1998 Bubble shape) with a low mileage, bog standard T16 Turbo engine transplanted in it to use as a donor engine.
Will get that out and rebuild with the intention of running many horsepowers!
