Churchill had a Humber Pullman and a special bodied 2 door Vanden Plas that pretty tragically got banger raced. I remember that being raced as it was at my local track - I would appreciate more info on the car and how it came to meet its end on the banger track if anyone has any. It was a 3 litre with a two door special body by Mulliner i think. There are stories it had a slightly raised roofline to accommodate the great mans hat too. It could only have been his personal car in his late years not an official car. Some say it was registered to Churchill but actually his wife used it. There was quite a bit of fuss about it at the time and the racer was offered good money to save it but turned it down. Complaints were made in Popular Classics and the editor spoke out about it too so the provenance must have been pretty solid. I read somewhere it was bought for £50 from travellers by the racer, probably as plausible an explanation as any.. Pics pre race in 1994

I think there is still speculation to this day about weather it was actually churchills car, as apparently two were built by the company and nobody knows where the other one went.
I could be wrong but sure I read that somewhere.

I could be wrong but sure I read that somewhere. Yeah thats right,i thought the old buff log book with Churchills signature was sold at the time though? I doubt he ever drove it,he had suffered several strokes by then and was a sick man.Probably more likely it was used by Clementine or just a general Chartwell staff car. There was a 64 Morris Oxford sold a few years ago for over 50k that also had Churchills signature on the log book. That was registered in his name less than a year before he died so again unlikely he ever used it personally.

If a PM were to be driven in such a classic car, I don't think it sends out the right messages - as much as I love classic cars. Would seem a bit odd to still keep some. [If so] Well folks, your tax money is also going on to maintain some P5Bs you'll hardly ever see

Well we are still letting the forces run around in 40+ year old knackered Land Rovers which is a joke , so i expect some of these cars a re somewhere. The Royals still have some , they were attacked by someone with paint in or something a few years ago or something like that ? Think it was a Rolls Royce .

We let them do that because they're far more squaddie proof than anything else available given em a modern one with complex electronics and see how long they last! The idea they're 'knackered' is laughable, they're simple tech that is well maintained so are pretty much as reliable as 'fleet' vehicles get.

They do break down a lot . Yes they are well maintained but they can and are left idle for long periods , meaning every convoy involves breakdowns . Ask any soldier , they do break down quite frequently . Yes they are somewhat soldier proof but they are not much use in theatre . Ok for trunding around and maybe Salisbury plain but totally unsuitable for modern warfare .
Underpowered , no protection , small payload compared to others . We learnt the hard way with Snatch land rovers that you just cannot keep bolting curse word on and expecting it to work . A new vehicle is needed .

We learnt the hard way with Snatch land rovers that you just cannot keep bolting curse word on and expecting it to work . A new vehicle is needed . The Snatch Land Rover was pretty good for what it was originally designed for, which was withstanding small arms fire and other improvised weaponry in Northern Ireland. Taking them out to Iraq and Afghanistan and expecting them to stand up to assault rifles and IED's etc that were intended to take out, or at least disable medium to heavy armour. Unfortunately MOD procurement procedures tend to see equipment -especially electronics- being obsolete before it even makes it into service. Back to the original subject, would I have more time for a Prime Minister who chose to run round in a P5 as an official vehicle? Most probably yes.
