Ok i am wanting to add an in tank fuel injection pump and swirl pot setup to an old fuel tank. I've been looking around for an aftermarket kit but the only UK supplied kit i could find doesn't have any swirl pot around the pick up www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/in-tank-fuel-pump-45psi. The tank its going into is a big flat one under the boot floor so it really needs something to hold fuel at the pickup to stop surge/starvation. There are plenty available in the USA for all sorts of prices but not that i could find over here to add to an old tank. So i'm going to be using one from a modern car instead as they mostly have a plastic swirl setup and pump all in one unit with pipe fittings and electric plug on top of a plate. What i'm looking for is recommendations for which car to get a setup from. Most have either a twist lock or a collar that screws down to hold them in so i will need the flange from the donor tank and weld it into my tank, which means it needs to be a metal tank i get one from rather than plastic. So instead of hunting around the local scrap yards for one that might fit i thought i'd ask on here for what people have used. I will most likely need to modify the pipes and brackets to change the height as the tank is very tall one side and very flat the other as it runs under the spare wheel area, so i doubt any modern one will be right out of the box. Oh and i know i could use a lift pump, swirl pot, and external inj pump but the tank is under the boot floor and there isn't really space for it all.

I'm finding it hard to visualise this tank ( had a late one...) But, I intend to convert my beemers old primary intank lift pump to a full blown injection pump and loose the outside unit altogether. That link is spot on. Cheers.

I'm mainly looking for what other people have used to do this sort of thing as i cannot be the first person on here to do it. But anyway the tank is from a Opel Manta Hatchback and looks like this Its 9.5" at the high side and 3 to 4" across the low side. So the odds of finding one the right height are slim but i have no issue modifying the height of the brackets holding the assembly together.

I did one years ago and cut a hole in the bottom opposite the pump hole and sunk a 3" sump pot in then used a cheap early Range Rover efi pump assembly for £25 on eBay and shortened the rod that the walbro type pump hangs off . The top of the efi pump is a 65mm steel 6 hole flange . I use the same pump assembly on my rod just changed the pump for a 255 walbro unit . Does mean welding though

Usually cut top off tank & take off swirl pot welding swirl pot (Has 4 footings) then tack into the bottom of the tank & weld the top in . Usually use Ford escort/ka etc.

On cortina tanks i welded (or had welded)in a sierra swirlpot and fitted the exterior pump next to the tank, easyer to change the pump if you don't have a acccess hole in the floor to match the pump location ?

Problem with an exterior pump (which the manta GT/e cars have) is its tucked right by the axle out in the elements and is a pain to get to if you have an issue. I really want to get away from that and have it in the tank. After looking under the floor of my car there is only a small area of the high part of the tank that i could add an access panel above. As a chassis rail runs right where the padding is on the photo above. So i wouldn't be able to use a modern pump and still get to it without taking the tank out, as all modern stuff is quite large to allow the swirl pot part to go through the same access hole. So it looked like having to add a metal swirl pot in the tank and a separate pump. So after Froggy's tip that the pump i found a link to is actually like a classic Range Rover EFi one i had a look and picked a new one up from ebay for £27. So a bit of checking on the best place to put the pump and i ended up with it in the back corner of the tank. This allows me to add an access panel above if i need to get to it in the future and an easy run of the fuel pipe with nothing in the way. So one 50mm hole later i have it sat in place As you may have noticed i have already cut a large hole in the top of the tank. This is to repair a rusty section on top but also to be able to clean the inside of the tank out fully and weld it safely. This also allows easy access to fit an in tank swirl pot. Once all the welding is done the tank is being treated to a POR15 rubberized protective lining from Frost Automotive so no worries about possible leaks. So i started looking around the web for people building their own in tank swirl pots and how i could do the same in my tank. So i am looking at boxing off the rear corner and having a hole to allow fuel in at the front, run down a gully and drop into the holding area. Plus the return pipe will also feed back into the pot. So hopefully even with low fuel and cornering with this at the back corner there will always be couple of inches of fuel around the pickup. So i have knocked up this Which sits here Its not welded in place yet as i can't decide if thats enough of if i want to add a lid to the other side of the pump so any hard left handers will not just see the fuel slosh up the curved tank wall. Any ideas/ suggestions of what else to add if anything?

I built a pot around my pump that takes around 1.5 litres with a single 3mm hole at the bottom to let it fill from empty and run the return directly into the pot . Mines in the n/s as most circuits are clockwise but it worked fine at Blyton which runs the other way
