I recently found a friend's old Mini by using this site; www.lostmotcertificate.co.uk/It'll come back with the garage they had the car MOT'd at. I called up and asked if they remembered it and eventually worked out it was owned by a friend of one of their mechanics. It's a long shot, but worth it for a tenner. Not sure of the legality of it, as it's not your information you're requesting, but no one's knocked on my door yet. If they do remember it and don't want to give you the number of the current owner, you could always ask them to pass yours on, which is what I did, haven't heard anything yet unfortunately.

It's defiantly worth trying. My friend sold his 205 Gti and instantly regretted it. I just happened to see it about a year later miles from where it was sold parked under a tree.
Stuck a note on it for him, the bloke called and he bought it back.
Happy days
