You don't need an oil temp gauge. There is a good reason why VW did not fit one. If you can't smell the oil, then it's not overheating. The generator charge light is there to warn you in case you throw a fan belt. As the fan is mounted on the end of the generator shaft, as long as you are charging, then the fan is spinning. These engines already have a very effective oil cooler, which is force-fed air from the fan. A secondary one should not be necessary unless you are running a really high compression ratio or doing heavy towing. Remember that these same engines also powered fully-laden vans and campers up hills on hot days. Or if you are running an open back end in a baja with tall tyres etc. I'm running a turbo, on an engine with a different cam, cr, heads, that screams all the way to 7k+ revs, with an open engine bay and no decklid, and still run stock as rock cooling and no temp gauge. A gauge will give you more to worry about unnecessarily.

I have a lot to do ! I will look at getting a new fuel pump, stock air filter , set the valves and replace gaskets on the rocker covers, change oil, change plugs , change fuel hose ( as someone put a plastic filter in a silly place ) get a glass filter and fit near the carb , get a stock dizzy ? New pioints and rotor arm , new manifold rubber connections ( one looks split ) That will get me a good starting point from all the gold I've been given so far ! I think I've checked the end float already - this is play on the crank pulley ? I pulled it back and forth and there doesn't seem to be any measurable movement - feels pretty tight Fad I'm in Birmingham near the NEC - welcome for a visit anytime ! I think I have been overthinking it - I've had a hillman imp and a Vauxhall viva HB and they were soooo different to this , I think not having an oil temp gauge makes it more scarey - at least that gives you a warning before the engine goes ! Both cars previously were fairly straight forward to fix up - just replacing everything gradually . What I loved best about the imp - it was always over heating even after I replaced EVERYTHING - so I got a micra rad and fitted that in the wheel well at the front - ran perfect after that ! Beetles seem to be a bit more complicated - I was thinking of adding an oil cooler but even that is really difficult ! Does anyone know where and what T peice I need to get to install an oil temp gauge with the pressure sender by the dizzy ? I think the combination of timing off, valves off, bad air filter, poor plugs , aftermarket dizzy , air leaks is all making it run like it is but is a testament to these cars as most old cars wouldn't drive at all with one of these problems ! Keep your pump. Keep your filter. don't touch rocker gaskets unless they leak. Oil and plugs are a good idea they give you a datum to start on. If you fit a filter near tge carb I'm gonna come kick you in the balls. No fuel filters in the engine bay. Keep your dizzy. Points rotor arm and condenser yes BUT KEEP THE OLD ONES. Manifold boots, if it looks split remove and inspect. But before you spend a single one of your hard won pennies do all the free stuff first. Then make a shopping list of what she needs. She is running now, chances are what you already have is fine by and large. End float is good news, it means we don't have to have a cuddle and a cry. Your warning when your engine is unhappy is smell sound and feel. You will know, she will tell you. These engines (or varients of) are used in planes, generators, fire pumps, were used in kubelwagons (military offroad vehicles), schwimwagens (amphibious military cars), T181 (ruggedised offroad cars), builders vans, pickups, campers, and until fairly recently taxis is Mexico and urban armoured personell carriers for riot and civil unrest control in South Africa. Ferdinand Porsche was not dicking around when he designed this engine. The reason it sounds complicated is because its so simple, with so many dual purpose roles of so many components and lack of ancilliaries. Folk overthink them and look for stuff that aint there and get confused when they don't see what they are expecting. Start small, start simple, be nethodical changing inly one variable at a time and you will find the issues.

Oh your carb preheat looks like its not sealed to your exhaust properly either. I see sooty flanges there... no one likes a sooty flange.
Nowt to worry about in the immediate but its a source of future problems with exhaust rot.

Again thanks for all the info guys - I really appreciate the time taken to put this stuff up for me ! I will certainly be looking at the valve clearances - I'm thinking my next job , I am going to get all the bits as advised here then go back through the messages and follow the instructions ( minus the fuel filter as I'm not keen on kicks in the balls lol ) I have also acquired a stock air filter ! I will fit and post pictures tomorrow Also fantastic news I won't need be doing any crying or needing cuddles |D , although I just saw the guy who sold me the car he may be in need of the cuddles he loves what is done with it and regrets selling it even more now ! I'll update tomorrow !

I fitted the ginormous air box today and took it for a 5 mile run - what a difference !
Runs way smoother now , no stalling and no oil patches when I got home - jobs a Goodun !
Tick over still sounds very fast - I think maybe fuel mix ?
Anyway she'll be resting till payday now and I can start doing the servicing bits to get it even better - thanks for the tips guys

Did you set up the carb from scratch including idle mix etc?
Did you set rockers?
Did you set timing USING A STROBE LIGHT?
Did you set points gap?
Bet you a kick in the balls the answer is "no"
;-)

Went to go out earlier , and I'd left the lights on all day on my Honda - my charger is broke so I had to drive and get my mates .
It drove amazing - did 18 miles like nothing , and hardly used any fuel !
There seems to be oil leaking from around the back of the dizzy somewhere but apart from that brilliant !

i think the idle mix is the reason I have a fast tick over , hopefully I won't mess it all up when I set it all !
I'm thinking I need new gaskets for the rocker covers , I'm getting gaskets and rubbers for the manifolds too , is there anything else I need for setting it all ? I don't like using old seals

New rocker cover gaskets are a good idea as the old ones will be past it and may leak if you re-use them - if they've not been replaced recently already. Pop a cover off and take a look before spending money!

Hi Fad , it's been in the garage since we last messaged - busy week at work
I'm not going to drive it until I have set it up as per your instruction , another busy weekend coming so perhaps next week sometime
Last time I drove it - it ran great with the stock air box , even the fuel consumption seems to have gone down too . I think fuel mix needs setting along with everything else . I get paid also this week so I'll be shopping lol , rocker gaskets, spark plugs , oil, manifold rubbers and points to start with. My only concern is the apparent oil leak I have coming from around the base of the dizzy somewhere - it's not a huge leak but there is oil coming from somewhere - not a mad panic but I would rather fix it if poss.
I think it's just driving and further tweaking once I have done the proper service it needs - weather is good now so I'll be aiming to drive it to work at least 3 days a week finger crossed !
Also - do you think I'll get bother off the police for no front mud guards ? I've had some confused coppers look at the car but no one has stopped me yet - seems a grey area

My advice: you need to prioritise- Get it running right first. If the leak is fairly minor / not immediately obvious where it's coming from then it can wait. Similarly, if coppers are clocking you but not pulling you over, don't worry about it.

Don't spend anything yet dude. Really honestly, the number of brand new parts I have kicking about that I never used because i bought stuff I thought I would need before I actually did the free stuff... The only thing I would say at this point to definitely buy is rocker cover seals, since you are taking them off to set your valve gaps and there's a chance they won't seal up when you put them back. The rest, leave on hold for now. Dismantle, inspect, and then spend.
It's not the po-po you need to worry about, it's the VOSA vans hanging around car events that you need to watch, they will have you for sure. Though the 5-0 will tug you for no mud guards on a bad day, most just can't be arsed with the hassle. If you are out driving in the rain then you will get pulled for sure - trouble is it comes under C&U regs. You will get a ticket for "dangerous protrusions" but that's easy to bat away if you can be bothered going to court (it's none-endorsable so you just pay a fine and job done) - glazier vans have the steel racks hanging off the side and are legal, and tyres protruding from the arches or having none is no different to what happens when you turn the wheels of your car, and it also requires a standard tested definition of "dangerous" which tyres do not fall under. What you WILL get is the requirement to prevent water spray from the roads which as I said is a C&U thing, not MOT or dangerous protrusions etc. On that front they have you bang to rights. Most Police either don't know the nitty gritty so won't bother tugging you, you *think* they know and try the strong-arm "I am a Copper, I know more than you, you will do as you are told" technique if you try and reason with them. Every now and then you might find you get a decent one who will say something along the lines of "Come on, yes ok it's a cool car, but you really need arches on it chap, please try and sort some out, ok?".
Anyway - as said, don't worry too much. Just don't give them a reason to tug you in the first place and drive sensibly.

Have you got mudguards on yours all the way around ? Have you ever been stopped? I was going to do the fronts but my mate has a 70s kit car which has never had front ones and he's never had any bother . I don't want to give them an excuse , plus like all businesses they are desperate for cash so will be hot to give me a fine if they can . Reason I say the police are a business - I had an angry idiot drive into me for no reason a few years ago , no idea why or what I did tbh , but I took images of his vehicle when he refused to stop and gave the police pictures , times , diagrams and maps with the cctv cameras where it happened , oh and his business address as it was on his pickup. Police did nothing for 5 months and they didn't prosecute the guy so it came off my insurance . Final correspondence came after I tracked down the cctv footage " we can see the event, can see it's clearly his vehicle, see him undertake a black car - but we can't identify your car as we can't see the number plate clearly " - BUSINESS MANAGER Suffolk Constabulary. FUnny as two weeks later they got me in the same place in a bus lane and fined me directly so yeah I'm not going to give them any excuse to fine me

Adjust your valves and replace the rocker covers as a matter of course. Easy to do and always overlooked.
