Here is my parent’s Golf GTI which I am selling on their behalf. As you will see in the photos, this is an exceptionally clean and original example of the mk4 GTI, which has been owned by my parents from new. It has a complete service history along with every MOT certificate. One thing I should mention about my Dad is he is incredibly particular about maintaining his cars to the highest standards, both cosmetically and mechanically.
The car was originally supplied by Dane Volkswagen of Chester and was one of the first mk4 GTIs to arrive in the UK. We couldn’t even find a demonstrator at the time so we had to drive a lower spec Golf and an Audi A3 with the 1.8T engine, and imagine what the two combined would be like! This car has the AGU engine with the K03 turbo which produces 150bhp.
The specification includes electric windows (x4), electric heated mirrors, air conditioning, electric tilt and slide sunroof, height adjustable Recaro seats, front fog lights, remote central locking with flip key and ISOfix mounting points. Tyres are all Michelin with plenty of tread – 5mm front and 6.5mm rear. There is also a matching alloy spare wheel. The car is finished in Jazz Blue pearl effect paint that has been protected with Auto Glym and Meguiars products since new.
The service history shows every annual service including an oil change every year, using Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil for the last several years. The servicing has been carried out by a reputable independent specialist, Central VW Audi in Ellesmere Port, since 2008. We have used them for all our cars including my own mk2 GTI. The last cambelt change, including tensioner and water pump, was done at 89,500 miles. The car has been run predominantly on Shell VPower/Optimax fuel; exclusively VPower since about 2008. The service history is complemented by a full set of MOT certificates showing no advisories in the last 6 years. It is also worth noting that both front window regulators and locks were replaced in 2013. These are a common weak spot on the mk4. The car has never been accident damaged, never been smoked in, never had pets in and never had children in.
The car is original and unmodified with the minor exception of the side repeaters having been changed from the early-spec smoked mk3-style items to the more common crystal clear mk4 type. I doubt anyone would have noticed this, but as my Dad and I are both keen to preserve originality, we have kept the original smoked repeaters and include them with the car as they are an unusual quirk of this early example. The only other deviation from the build specification is the stereo. This car was supplied with a radio cassette in one DIN slot and the storage tray in the other, but the tray has been replaced with a CD player from a later model. It’s a genuine Volkswagen unit and works exactly as it should with the original radio.
Other interesting points to note with this early example are that it didn’t have the red ‘I’ character on the GTI badge, and the Recaro seats are actually slightly narrower than those of a later model I once owned. Also note the condition of those huge bolsters! Only the driver’s seat shows slight wear to the fabric that isn’t even close to wearing through, which is rare for these seats.
Of course, with any older car there are a few bad points worth noting. First, the central locking does not work on the boot lid. It has to be locked and unlocked manually with the key in the lock. The boot handle itself is also corroded. It’s not very noticeable but close up you can see the paint has bubbled where the aluminium casting has oxidised. The battery could be nearing the end of its life. It is needing a top up more regularly these days, but it could just be down the lack of use of the car more recently. Also there is some very minor corrosion starting to show along the bottom edge of the rear screen. This is almost certainly as a result of having the rear screen replaced over 12 years ago. I’ve included a photo of the affected area and you can see it’s not bad at all. I just want to be open about anything that is less than perfect.
Included with the sale are the original number plate ‘trim strips’ which show the dealer name, a set of genuine clip-on headlight beam deflectors for continental travel and three spare wheel centre caps.
In summary, I think you’ll struggle to find another mk4 GTI that has been so lovingly cared for its whole life and has not been through the hands of a long list of boy racers. It really is an exceptional example and the new owner will not be disappointed.
