Thought I should add to this thread what happened yesterday. Pulling out of the B&Q car park at North Shields, and the traffic is murder. Everyone is blocking the roundabout, and then it happens - a white haired pensioner lets me out. That pensioner was driving a red Austin Mini Cooper, with white stripes down the bonnet, a wide arch kit, alloy wheels, and rally lights. Was such a surprise

This 69 year old white haired pensioner drives a 2.7 Cayman as a daily. Built and races 2 Clan Crusaders, both here and on the Continent, and has just renewed my National A race licence. Also build all my Imp race engines and have a K1100 BMW engine ready to go in a third Clan. Had a total hip replacement last year and raced at Spa 10 weeks later.

I didn't know whether to post this but you'll see why.
Growing Old Disgracefully - let's make a few more get there.
I am here today with thanks to my sponsors, the NHS and Prostate Cancer UK. If you're over 50 and haven't had a blood test to assess your PSA level then go nag your doctor for one. I've been having blood tests for PSA levels for the last few years because I can't pee like a young stallion any longer and that's an indicator of an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate is not a sign of cancer as the prostate enlarges as us old gits older. Now a PSA test is not a certain indicator of cancer but I'd had lowish levels of 4.5-4.7 for a while and just watched an old friend die through a metastasised prostate cancer so I went off to the docs to ask for an MRI scan to set my mind at rest. Maybe I was lucky but I got a quickish appointment and had the scan. Two weeks later I had a call to see the oncologist and was advised that I had some areas of 'concern' in/on the prostate. The next step was a template biopsy where they strap a metal template to your perineum (look it up) which is drilled with pattern of holes that align a series of hollow needles that are used to take sample from the prostate. It's done under general anaesthetic and is day surgery so you're out the same day, a bit sore and walking like John Wayne. Waited two weeks and another appointment with the oncologist, it seems my 4.5-4.7 scores corresponded to 27% of all sites sampled with cancer. Luckily it hadn't broken out the prostate wall and metastasised.
Now came the big decision of three options (1) Wait and see if the cancer progresses with regular monitoring, I have a friend doing this because he's ten years older and the cancer is static. (2) Radical prostatectomy where they sever the urethra and carve the prostate, which is a doughnut around the urethra, away with the help of a robot surgeon called Archimedes which then reattaches the urethra together. (3) Radiation treatment in three flavours (a) Low dose brachytherapy which involves a reverse template biopsy where they implant low dose radioactive seeds directly in the cancer sites. (b) High dose brachytherapy as above where they implant high dose radioactive seeds directly in the cancer sites. (c) External radiotherapy, some chemo and hormone treatment.
I was lucky that low dose brachytherapy was suitable for my cancer. It was an overnight procedure and I ended up walking like John Wayne again. 3 months later my PSA score is 0.7 and the oncologist says the prognosis is good.
Why have I monopolised your attention thus far? Well in the UK, about 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Men aged 50 or over, men with a family history of prostate cancer and black men are more at risk of getting prostate cancer.
You want to play with old and modified cars for a lot longer then if you haven't been checked out then get it done.
Thanks for your attention.

Enjoy what you can whilst you can, it's none of their business I say! (only 25 so plenty of time to get more miles in!)

This morning a colleague told me of a group of old men in the retirement village complex where his mother lives. They have a shared engineering workshop within the complex and are rebuilding a '60 something Ford Falcon between them. By all accounts it is as much an excuse for drinking beer together as it is a serious project. Good luck to them I say.
