vinegar or any acid will do the job, but its not selectively removing iron oxides, it will carry on with the iron too ive been trying that evaporust product from frost auto. overnight bath did this

I use Northern Blacking in Sheffield, you can see how their stuff has come out on my build thread. As above though, it only comes out as well as the prep you put in.

Thanks for the lead on stchrome I realise that pitted metal will show I just did it as a test to see how the acid worked as I said a new bit was only £10 so I just replaced it. Darkspeed funnily enough its a fuel pump and accumulator bracket that I started working on , its in 3 bits 2 are £10-£12 but the main bit is a stinging £125 +vat so its worth spending a bit of time on. As I said the parts are like polished steel with any pitting sanded out and are ready to be plated seems daft to send dirty rusty stuff and have to pay to have it made ready . I just realy want a rough idea as it may be more cost effective to just replace some of the bits Thanks to all who have replied it looks like it would be a popular service if you could do it at the right price say so much per kilo for ready prepped items Graeme Johnson

"Zinc and yellow Passivate" is what you need to be asking about, where in the country are you ? Yellow pages under "electroplating" will be your best bet, many of these places are very oldschool, with no web presence
There are some good ones dotted around though.
Its not expensive and makes all the difference to the quality of your finished build

Good idea about yellow pages I think some of these firms are just to large to want to bother with just a few brackets and give you a high price to put you off. agree about the difference in quality it gives I am trying to refurbish as much as I can unbolt while leaving the block and heads in place and each time you do an area it makes you want to do more. I am based in Oxford but don't mind sending parts out Thanks for taking the time to reply Graeme Johnson

Theres a really old platers in northampton which are very good, been there donkeys years and they are doing Zinc&Pass all the time so they will just put it in with a load of other stuff. they will just plate it though. So if you want it looking really nice then get the wire wheel out and burnish it all up first. I did my Uprights, and took all the casting flash marks off them etc, they came up really nicely and will be much easier to keep looking clean as a result too. Degrease everything and then a Wire wheel in a bench grinder is the quickest solution really, gets stuff clean enough and a decent finish, cleans threads on bolts etc. I just have 2 buckets 1 with stuff to be wire brushed, and one after and just work through it. so much nicer bolting clean, plated stuff back on, with clean, plated bolts
