Mk2 escort gearbox identification

I've had a quick Google but confused myself, I'm after a mk2 escort gearbox but are 1.3 and 1.6 gearboxs different? I.e ratios?
I'm after a gearbox for a mk2 escort 1.6 sport engine that's going in my mk2 cortina, are there different ratios within the 1.6 range I. E sport ghia etc??

if so are there any numbers on the tags to look out for??

Yes they are different,
I'm fairly sure the 16 sport box (ratio) is unique in the mk2.

If you have the Haynes manual for the mk2 it lists the different ratios....

I've just looked but my book is at work so can't help you more till Monday..
There will be a aluminium tag,usually under the bolts holding tailhousing to box,or under a bolt holding top cover on,this should have numbers but will be hard to cross reference them.
I think you can also I.d. Some boxes as they have no gap between the selector shaft tube,and tailhousing.
All mk2 crossflow boxes have bellhousing integral with main case (does not seperate)

Why not fit a 5 speed.. ?

Have you no gearbox at all currently,
I don't think the mk2 escort box was same as mk2 cortina ?
Gear-lever and mounts may not be in same position ?

Yeah I have a 1.3 Mk2 cortina box, but it's like stirring portage.
I thought the escort box was same as the cortina box??

I thought cortina'a had the heavier duty box,
Does the bellhousing bolt to your gearbox,or is it all one casting ?

Gearlevers on escorts,screw into the top,at the very end of the tailshaft housing above where prop goes in.
Usually they are a very good gearchange,if it was poor it'd likely be a fault with the gearstick.

There's a few different Ford rear wheel drive gearboxes even in the early cars,along with different gear-lever fittings and positions,I think the mk1 Mexico used to use a box similar to early cortina.
Mk2 escort with OHC (so mex/RS2) got the heavier gearbox with seperate bellhousing.

Had a look at some info I have,
Standard mk2 gearbox (so crossflow,not pinto / RS)
There were only 2 versions of the same gearbox,
Standard and heavy duty,HD gets close ratio gears of increased strength.

Ratios were:
Standard. HD
1st. 3.656:1. 3.337:1
2nd. 2.185:1. 1.995:1
3rd. 1.425:1. 1.418:1
4th. 1.000:1. 1.000:1
Rev. 4.235:1. 3.867:1

It also says,
In the 'standard' box,produced in England,the selector tube is inserted in extension housing and sealed with O rings.
All other variants have a cast selector tube.
