When this event was on I kept thinking "must make a thread", and then failed because so many other things were going on at the same time. Rather than let this slip by though I thought I'd put together a little selection of photos from Flickr to get a flavour of probably the most sought after prize in hot rod terms in the US of A.

Oh my lord - amazing cars! Now, I've had a go at finding out what a couple are but I'm stumped!

Absolutely love that grey coupe. Thought it was a Studebaker but not sure now...

And that creamy green Alfa ( I think!! - couldn't zoom in on the badge). That's an absolute honey and I think the rims are an all time favourite. That colour scheme would work well on a modern.

I tried to find some more info, couldn't find much, it looks to be an Alfa Romeo, someone labeled it as the "Italian Stallion" but searching for that with a combination of hot rod type words brings up no more pictures of details of a builder. It looks like an Alfa 6C, but it would be a very brave person that decided to rod their Alfa 6C coupe rather than restore it, so I don't know what the deal is...

Have to say that that Alfa is a stunning piece of work, paint and wheels work so well together. Just goes to show that European car design in the 30s was as good as anywhere - just a shame that base material like this is so expensive!

I'm very pleased to see that the builders of that Alfa have manged to keep much of the identity of the original car. So many of the high end American show cars are changed beyond all recognition so that retaining the name of the base car is mostly irrelevant. 

There are some very nice cars in that Flikr link. These two or example would probably appeal even to those here who don't really like 'rods and American cars. Dare I say European influenced?

Okay so it is a 1938 Alfa Romeo Corte apparently converted from 4 door to 2 door.

"In 2011, Bartoni bought just the body from a man in Pleasanton.

“There were no other parts to it,” said Bartoni.

He got in touch with the president of the Alfa Romeo Club of America in search of parts.

“What I needed was a donor car,” Bartoni said. The president asked him how many 1938 Alfa Romeo Cortes he’d ever seen.

“I’ve never seen one,” Bartoni replied.

“He said, ‘Does that tell you something?’ ”"
