Hi there, I am originally from Manchester and have been living in Sydney for the last 17 years. I have come across a 1990 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia that has only 23k miles on it. It was imported into Australia some 14 years ago and has lived in a storage garage since then. Its in good overall condition but the owner who imported this and a lot of other low mileage UK cars but didn't register them in Australia. My question is given its been in storage for the last 17 years, to recommission this into daily use, do you think its a big job. The owner just had the Bosch FI system rebuilt and the car is running but has a couple of rust scabs on the rear arches and near the sunroof. Given I probably need to spend about AU$3k (1800UKP) to get it complianced and registered to use in Australia, plus some money to recommission parts such as brakes etc, should I just forget it? When I was 18 my boss had one of these in this colour and he used to let me drive it, so its a bit of a nostalgia trip, and probably one of only a couple over here in Aus. The car is pretty cheap to buy AU$3k (1800UKP), and there are a few Xr3i's here for sale that have been imported which sell for about $8-10k, so I think I won't be in too deep if I decide I've had my fun. Cheers Steve

Ha, I third the others opinions - buy it & drive down nostalgia highway. I remember when I lived on the Northern Beaches ( of Sydney - to those who don't know), I used to pass a guy's garage near me, in which was sat a TR4, still wearing its UK number plates. It looked like it'd never moved from when it'd been imported. Such a shame it never got to turn a wheel in anger, on some of those lovely Northern Beaches roads.

Before you do, make sure it can be registered in Australia/NSW. I have heard (possible pub talk...) that it's not always possible to get an imported car registered.

Just a thought, which may not apply to the Aussie climate, but I had a 1988 model in similar circumstances (garaged, only done about 30k etc) and when we MOT'd it there was rot all down the OS inner sill/floorpan which I had to weld up. You'd have never thought it looking at the car, but i was later told that this was a common occurrance on these.
I'd still buy it tho' it was a great car till my eldest shoved it into the back of a taxi!

I can see several slight flaws in this plan; 1. It's manufactured by Ford. 2. It's their Orion model. 3. It's going to cost you as much money as a decent car would.
You've got meaty big Holden's lying around all over the place for chump change, when in Rome .... (You might notice the Romans didn't import Ford Orions!)

If you think you can a) register it and b) out it easily without blowing your brains out should you choose, then fine, give it a whirl. I know from experience that getting parts for something not often seen on the local roads can be a right royal pain but again, if they are available, okay. Me? Sorry, I'd be looking for already registered and larger engined fodder.

If it has never been on the road here it may be considerably harder for you to register the car than it would be for the original owner due to certain rules & taxes which may be waived or reduced for a car brought in by an owner with proof of ownership & use overseas (possibly a year?) before they imported it.. Likely including emissions & requirements for Cats & unleaded fuel here from 1986, not sure what allowances may be made for age.
Certainly VERY rare here, everyone's seen a Ferrari! But finding appreciative buyers might not be easy.

I doubt it is worth it.
You'd end up with an unknown model with no spares availability and zero desirability, assuming you could rego and insure it.
I doubt you could move it on when the time came to sell.
Unless they are worth big money in the U.K. in which case buy it and ship it back? I suspect that only works for Mk1 Escorts and Splitties though.
