I've got a bit of an odd one with my '97 Chevy Suburban.
When I first acquired said vehicle, I replaced the factory stereo with a Sony head unit (that has been perfectly fine in at least 2 previous vehicles I've owned). The issue is that sometimes, after I've shut the vehicle off, I can be wandering past it at any point (can be several minutes, hours or days later) and see that the stereo has switched itself back on.
It always shuts the stereo off when I turn the ignition off, it never stays running.
As soon as I open a door the stereo shuts off. I have to open a door, just unlocking it with the fob has no effect.
Any ideas? Ta!
EDIT: It only seems to be the stereo, nothing else inside turns on. All wires were correctly soldered and then heatshrinked, not just twiddled together and taped!

While looking for delay relays for a different purpose, I found a relay that had a similar advertised function.
The radio will stay on with ignition off but the radio will turn off when the door is opened.
It doesnt explain fully why its turning on, but there are relays designed to do this kind if thing, for some reason.
No idea if this relates to your issue or not, but might be worth looking for a relay somewhere in the wiring. The ones I saw have a switched live and a switched earth taken from the door interior light switch.

It's a ghost, is it always the same station or frequency?

Paranormal intervention, I hadn't thought of that.... Now that you mention it, every time it turns on, it is playing songs from the same USB stick.... I'll have a look VW, cheers for the suggestion. I want to wire in a sub soon, so I'll reinspect all of the wiring, just in case there is anything that could possibly cause an intermittent 'permanent live' that might interfere with the ignition live (or something along those lines).

If it didn't you would only be able to have the radio on with the engine running. It turns off when you open the door to ensure you don't accidentally leave the radio turned on when you leave the car. It's a bit annoying when you are working on the car and want the stereo on at the same time!

A 97 Chevy aint gonna have keyless ignition though lol
It sounds like a voltage coming back up through the stereo ignotion live and energising it. Bad earth somewhere I would guess. Or maybe a diode on the way out. Is the head unit new?

I had this before. I remember a few nights I could hear loud music blaring out, and thinking how inconsiderate. A couple of nights later I tracked it down to my MR2 switching the radio on -oops.
I believe a quick cure is to add a new fused live from the battery or spliced into the main/root 12v wiring.

You are right fad - no keyless ignition systems here - just a good old fashioned key. Oddly, one of the smallest car keys I've had, for one of the largest cars! I've been thinking about it (not had chance to actually look at it yet), and it must (obviously) be the fact that 12v is somehow getting back to the switched live on the stereo and powering it up. It could be a bad earth somewhere, or even something wrong in the general wiring. I have a new multifunction switch (wipers, hazards, indicators, cruise control etc.) to fit - this one is a bit temperamental with indicators/hazards at times - I think a day of wiring is in order (hopefully have some time next Sunday!) The head unit isn't new, it was in an Alfa I bought a few years back, and it's been in a few cars since (Jeep Cherokee, LR Discovery and now this) I have a different one I can chuck in it, see if it makes a difference (could well be a diode within the unit on the way out or similar, as suggested) before I delve into the wiring side of things. Cheers for the ideas chaps

One of the most common ways of back feeding 12v into a stereo and having it work whilst switched off is to have the electric aerial switched feed connected to a power source. The electric aerial switched output is taken from the stereo after the power switch. Hence, if power is fed up the aerial switched feed the stereo will turn on and the power switch will have no effect.
Not sure how a failing diode could cause this fault. They normally fail open circuit.

They normally fail open circuit. Failing diodes are indeed udually open circuit. But what can also happen is thermal runaway and all sorts of odd things. They can let a trickle back the way they arent supposed to (I have seen this on a bridge rectifier before) offering some resistance rather than looking like an open circuit
