Has this had the sump dropped and cleaned? With a full history you don't really need to tbh, it's only really a problem if semi-synth oil has been used. The B2*4 engines weren't as susceptible to sludging. I've done mine which is a B235R with full service history and a massive file of receipts and it was all spotless, not a single bit of sludge or oil staining on anything, even when I changed the rocker gasket it was all clean. The REV6 PCV works wonders on them too for £50ish and an hours work. ref the sump drop, one of the guys mentioned it on UKSaabs, and sdaid it would be £100 or so well spent. With that in mind I rang my local Saab specialist (Alexanders in Thornaby). They rang back (left a voicemail)and quoted me £440. That's where I've kind of left it for now. I'm thinking they've over-thought what I wanted them to do, or is it not just a £100 job? Something I'll have to pick up and run with again after our wedding in 10 days. That said, it's had regular oil changes (every 5k-6k), and has just had another. Any more info on the PCV " xbl" ?

There's a thread on uksaabs about the breather. The B2*4 engines don't suffer with sludge.

Love the car but kinda prefer the style of the plates you replaces, I am a man who also hates scabby number plates but i do prefer the clean uncluttered look of the plain plates! Still looks much better for having new ones. I know what you mean about the 'clean' plates Davey. When I changed them on my J30, I went for older looking, badge-less layout, as I think they suited that car better...... On the Saab, I went for a black side badge as I think they look smart against a black car.

The J30 ones look great minus the black outline but its your car and they look smart on it. I did the opposite on my Alfa. Old left, new right.

It's usually one of the first things I do to a new car (well, new to me!). I've now amended my usual badge format though, and kicked the EU circle of stars into touch haha!

To be fair, the transformation(s) is / are not going unnoticed. A different thread from the norm, here, but I for one like the change.
Keep it up

I've never claimed to have the amazing skills or abilities of other members on this forum, or the budget of others to be honest. Some of the work that goes on in other threads in this parish are simply outstanding, and I applaud them all. What I like to do is get my cars turning heads by looking after the little details, doing the small things that get them looking their best without looking modified in the most part. Some people will find this thread doesn't wow them, and that's fine, as I've never claimed it to be a 'wow' build thread. It's nice to see the positive feedback from people here, and I'm happy people enjoy my writings and pics of what are usually 'unloved' motors.

My favourite thread at the mo'. I admire the transformations and engineering that are going in to some of the cars on here, but financially can't relate to them and have no desire to 'wow' a scene. Simple improvements on often-overlooked models interest me far more because I can do it, too!

Keep up the good work buddy, these people who say it's boring are the ones who in 20 years time will be whinging when theyve spent thousands welding them up, forgetting that people like yourself looking after them now saves all that aggro. And if this turns out anything like the Probe, then it will be a top example

When I had mine I wanted a sump drop as well, being overly expensive I never got round to it. Because I had to invest in a new throttle body and a new turbo I wanted to be 100% sure however that the engine itself was in perfect shape. My local SAAB specialist was no help since he insisted the only way to inspect the engine was to drop the sump and remove the head. ($$$) A friend of mine has a local Opel garage however, and when I told him about it he laughed and said "bring it to me, I'll even send you pictures". What he did was the following: added some flushing substance to the oil, removed the oil, let the engine leak clean for 2 or 3 days, removed the 4 spark plugs and the sump plug, got his endoscope-camera, made me about 200 photo's of the inside of the engine on various timing positions through the sump plug hole and the spark plug holes. Worked brilliantly. I'd say find someone who has such an endoscope camera, let him do it for a fraction of the £440 you are quoted. (or buy one that suits your phone on the interwebs and do it yourself for practically nothing!)

Sump drop should be approx £100. Definitely do it on the 2L engine. The B235's were specified to have fully synthetic oil from the factory, the B205's weren't and this is where half the problem is. That and the £50 PCV breather kit update. I had a 2002 9-5 Vector Sport (B205) and on the drive home from the seller it developed a rattle due to oil starvation, I had the sump dropped and a new timing chain fitted, but it also ate the turbo whilst it was at it. On the plus side, I got the Aero turbo fitted and a remap later on and it was great! This was mine:

Mine has the B204, which apparently didn't suffer from sludge issues like the later ones. Is that correct?

Yes it's the B2*5 engines that suffer oil pick up sludging, the PCV and breather system was made from poor quality materials and broke down which then fed/dropped into the sump.

9-5's never had the B204 fitted, they're all T7 cars with the B205/235. For the sump drop and PCV kit you're looking at £50 for the kit plus oil and filter and a tube of the special sealant so it's coming in at £100 if you DIY it. I don't know how long it takes a pro but I probably spent a good 4 hours doing mine.
It might not need doing though, there's some way of identifying if you have the updated kit.
