The engine came out of the box with a damaged on/off switch. Its brand new. Went to start it but no joy. So I removed the switch and crossed the wires, Still no joy when I pull it. No spark. Whats my next check?

Hi, what engine/ignition (Points/magneto/CDI ?) I spent a lot of time with Honda step-through motors as a kid (the most basic engine ever?) - they have 2 types of wiring, 50cc/70cc you need to connect 2 wires to make it run, the 90cc *stops* if you connect wires together as it's a kill-switch system. Swap the HT lead from yor engine to a spare sparkplug, hold that against the engine - check if you have a spark. If no spark, make sure the wires are *not* touching and try again. I'm assuming it is an ignition issue, not a blocked carb or similar Pics are always good (just for fun if nothing else ) Have fun, let us know how it goes

Petrol mowers have wires from the coil and I assume they stop the spark when you earth them so this could well be the same.

Generally the wires are shorted, possibly to earth to stop it. Try insulting the wires from each other and the block and see if you have a spark.

If it's a Honda GX industrial, it must be level, with the correct oil level . They have a safety cut out .

If it's a Honda GX industrial, it must be level, with the correct oil level . They have a safety cut out . Its not a honda. Its a Lifan ,the cheapest I could find. And yes it was the oil level. The dipstick was showing good level. But eventually I wiped it clean.....and the oil stayed on. A waxy bit of summat. Not oil at ALL. Am a curse word :-( Thanks for the help. She's running fine now. 17221491_1607290559298946_5233416610793914368_n by quickrack, on Flickr

My mate used to borrow my Honda generator this time of year ,used to take it in his field, and run a hose from the exhaust, to gas moles ... After pulling his arm out tugging the string for an hour trying to get it to go, it was realized the thing wasn't level .. buy which time the moles had made even more molehills...

This of course is why moles dig holes in the first place. To make the ground not level so people can't gas them. Clever little blighters.
