I'd like to nominate fad and 93fxdl for UK Prime Minister and deputy (flip a coin to decide who gets which post - I'll happily vote for them both!)
We have local elections scheduled for May - any chance one of you could move into my area before then and stand for election?  *PLEASE*

georgeb - I'm no expert but I suspect your 750v DC will be more than ample for most cars that normally operate with just 12v DC. Do you have a set of 750v jumpleads - or can you borrow a set?

A couple of slightly more feeble sensible suggestions :
can you borrow a multimeter (not locked in a random car boot) to check the voltage of the jumper pack - it might help you check if it the pack is charging or if you have a dead battery in it.
can you beg/borrow/scavenge a 12v solar charger? (I have one that plugs into the cigarette lighter or direct to the battery to keep things charged when a car is parked up - I'm fairly confident that you get more sunlight than I do @uk - way oop North)

Agree on the PM bit, although I'm not really bothered who, or what, the UK PM is, but fad has obviously given it some thought.

Fancy that, I always thought Morpeth a quiet little country town. Not somewhere you'd need the riot squad at a council meeting! Used to go up that way a lot, 'cos I liked Alnwick and just that part of the world in general.

We don't have planning issues here. The judicial use of brown envelopes means there's no such thing as needing permission!

I can always borrow a couple of earthing straps and Line 1's overheads. Best stand well back and get a Filipino to connect it all up though.

Don't know anyone with a meter. Nobody I know would dream of touching a vehicle with its bonnet up! I'm just going to take it round to the little man for charging. Once the errant hoses eventually arrive, then it'll be used, so battery won't be an issue any more.

Unfortunately, where I park the '38 (The Pit of Hell) has all the ambient light of a pothole lit by a TocH lamp, so unless I buy 300' of extension lead, I can't get anything near sunlight! But thanks for the thought, it's ironic that one would be useless here.

^ fad I move around occasionally but try to leave clues about where I'm currently living (in my profile left of this post), in my sig, in my ongoing housemoving ads (things like "collect from Morpeth"), but if none of that works folk often notice my scruffy green 70s daily parked on the drive or being used & abused around the area

Ps 240volt over a long enough lead would drop to 12volts then a simple diode pack would make it DC for the cars systems, or a batch of lightbulbs connected in series could be used to drop the voltage, possibly!

I'll sort the admin South of the border. I'll get my regime up and running while Boadicea / Boudica / Wilhelmina Wallace prances around with rousing speeches, and I will set up a refugee program for any Scots wanting away from it (you can have Northumberland, it's just as wet, miserable and dreary with sod all industry or commerce as further North but without any of the real momentum, national identity, pride or self worth - you can shape it how you wish).

Once England is well and truly sorted out, and I have set up a penal colony for all the trouble makers (maybe use Wales? Trying to keep things on track (or going downhill - depending on your view), I think we've just about got the Scottish & Northern England solution sorted.
Not much else is needed but if I can help* in any way just let me know.
* I can offer to transport essential supplies over the border to the Scottish "new order", and bring back any Scot refugees / English ex-pats as needed.
** Transport will be by tat-wagon, nominally rated at 1/2 ton but 1 ton is ok (we have tested this). I have plenty of experience at border crossings on "unpassable" back-roads (un-named farm tracks, A1 between Newcastle & Edinburgh etc). Always happy to help a worthy cause!
Could I ask that you reconsider where to house the troublemakers? I like parts of Wales as it has the same unspoiled/unpopulated coutryside as my homelands - could I nominate somewhere South instead? Start small - Isle of Sheppy? Maybe draw a line across the Midlands or Home Counties and write off the area below the line? If it has to be Wales - just reinstate Offas Dyke?

Apologies for drifting on-track (?), but as I'm in helpful mood would something like this help in the '38 pit-of-doom (just add a willing volunteer), it would save filling the cavern with smog?

If there’s ever an award for a thread that, by going so far off topic, becomes worthy in its own right, then this has to be right up there!

Loving the plans for the divvying up of the UK. I always liked the North-South divide, it had a certain symmetry about it (and of course, I wasn’t in the southern bit) so it’s nice to see the concept being expanded and even written into legislation.

I reckon that between you, it’s pretty much sorted out and once your plans are complete, perhaps you’d consider a spot of consultancy work? I say this because the errant population of Mindanao have been kicking off for donkey’s years now, to no discernible effect that I can see. Perhaps they’d benefit from your vision for the UK model?

Of course, there’s those nice Abu Sayyaf people who go around cutting the heads off foreigners, but as they’ve probably been doing it under different names for centuries anyway, I shouldn’t worry too much about that.

Anyway, to reluctantly return this thread to, if I remember, its original (and remarkably dull by comparison) subject. Over the last week or so, Madam has listened to me curse cheap shoddy curse word that your ex-company deems a just reward for making them millions over the years, the fact that I have a flat battery and the need to remove it, stick it in a sidecar and take it round the corner for PHP70 worth of electricity. She has borne this stoically. Mentioning that I was going to purchase a battery charger, she asked what one of those was. I explained about boxes with wires poking out, plugs, crocodile clips, etc., to be greeted with, “Oh we have one at water station. Why you not say?

So whatever purpose this thread ever had in the first place has now completely disappeared, due to us having a “secret” battery charger all along.

Now we can concentrate on the far more important issues of dividing nations with no rude interruptions!

Oh, and may I say thanks for the myriad suggestions? The exercise bike with the alternator and a little man is favourite so far.

Tempting though it is to provide assistance to a struggling "democracy" my employer has a large presence in Malaysia, and my interference could destabilize that entire region, and so deprive them of a major source of cheap labour. I am currently preparing my manifesto for an independent Scotland, the cornerstone of which is finding a "final solution" to the lifestyle unemployed, the funds saved could then be used to turn Scotland into a world superpower, should additional funding be needed, a quick reduction in taxes should see billions pouring into the tax haven off the coast of Europe
