We've got a Mk2 Octavia vRS hatchback - epic family car. I'm 6'1" and have plenty of legroom with a child seat behind me, and the vast boot easily swallows two pushchairs plus various bags. ...and when they're not with you in the car, it's basically a Mk5 Golf GTI

Don't know the legroom, but what about a Honda Jazz, or Vauxhall Zafira. No idea about the zafiras, but the jazz is a joke. Courtesy one i had a couple of weeks back, i was shoehorned into it.

I know you've already said that a Multipla is out of the question, but here's a pic of the rear seats in mine which as my youngest is nearly 4 has now got a high back booster as opposed to a baby seat. Still a sizeable amount of legroom and a flat floor which means it's dead easy to get in and out of from either door. The rear seats are also adjustable forward and back, giving you either better legroom or a bigger boot. Similar features to our CRV, just bigger and better engine. Perhaps need to work on the mrs'attitude to them.

Hi there congratulations on your news. We have a 61 plate berlingo multispace bought new from citroen with every extra you could get.its very versatile and has plenty of room.and sliding side doors which helps in busy carparks. My daughter is now 17 months. And we got lucky with a deal on 2 cybex pallas 2 seats. One for my 1996 /97 audi c4 avant. But the berlingo isn,T very retro but it's reliable and you can pick them up with low mileage for not a lot of money.we are looking at a vw caravelle now so we can take my mountain bike with us. And still have the comfort and space..Oh remember your back Aswell. As mine is getting a little knackered now.but that's part of the fun.hope you get something.and good luck. Dayvans such as the caravelle were an idea, same reason as you. Think budget is an issue. £2,500 I'm in knackered vivaros and rotten transits.

His is 2012, seemed more back seat room than our Saab etc.

I'm 6'2 the mrs is 5'9. We managed the first 2 years in a mk6 fiesta and pug 207! My old a4(basically an octavia) had plenty of front/rear room for us both. Car seat behind me was still ok and i make use of the room! Now in a 3 series estate, granted its a 2012 so its allot bigger inside than any car iv owned so far. But even the e46 touring has plenty of room! Doesnt feel like an estate and i prefer the estate to the saloons nower days as the boots in a 4dr saloon are useless! Plus they're better looking imo. 2nd is due in june and I'm not worried about space at all.

Congrats!! You're life will never be the same again! Hope you don't expect to be doing any long haul without having to stop at every single flipping services for the first few years. We're also expecting in a month or so. #3.
Been looking at getting a Honda FRV or a Toyota Verso. Good ones aren't cheap though. Check out Mumsnet for honest appraisals of the modern stuff. (It's put me right off ever having another Renault.)

The mechanic at my work has a kid sedona. He got it for 1800 pounds and it has everything. But I think it's a bit heavy on the fuel.and he was saying depending on which year you buy it can be sore on the car tax. I think he said it has 40 odd thousand and he has 2 kids again with the bikes and stuff. He said there cumfy to drive too.i think he got it from autotrader on a private sale. Just a thought.

If i could find another that good, I'd have one. W/r the Fiesta, I must have height in the wrong places. Used to drive mk6 for work extensively, and even 1up they were hateful. Legroom was ok on my own, but the seats were gash. I also found mk2 & mk2.5 Focai seats to be the same. Sold my mk2 after doing 48k miles in a year in it. Company's 2.5 was no better.

Sedona is the huge MPV? Only see 22mpg on the CRV with the wife using it around town

We got a Golf Plus for family duties, it's been faultless. Boot is big enough for a travel system and the rear seats slide forward / fold 60/40 for more storage. Can also turn the passenger airbag off, which is handy when they are a bit older. img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/JoeM/Golf%20Plus/20140429_193347.jpg[/IMGFunnily enough I also had a 2004 CRV as well as the plus, nice motors but rubbish on fuel lol.

Congratulations!
No baby seat experience here but I'm 6' 2" with a bad back and found the 2002 V70 T5 I had the most comfortable and spacious car I've owned. I could easily and comfortably sit behind the drivers seat in my position with room to spare. Also fantastic boot space, good safety and your wife's back with really appreciate the heated front seats - they really are spectacularly comfortable.
Also, good fun, reliable, plenty of power and very refined long distance.
I have the older 850 T5 now which is more raw and basic, more fun to drive but doesn't feel as solid so not sure I'd transport babies in it.
Alternatively, VW Caravelle (I have one of those too - no legroom issues!) but you'd be looking at slow NA diesel in your budget so no sure your wife would want to drive it daily.
Have a look on the Volvo forum at the for sales and ask advice over there if you do go that way, they're a helpful bunch :-)

Cheers for the ideas chaps.
Mazda is functional, but quite low-rent. Unsure whether it's be comfy in long distance mode.
Seems to be overwhelming support for v70s.
Seen a few t5s, t6s. Loads of 2.4s and d5s.

Will check out S-max.
Just done a trial fit with the Maxi-Cosi in the CRV & the wife as test dummy.
Baby carrier on isofix takes somewhere around 760mm in length. CRV can fit this in just, but NSF seat has to go forwards circa 4" and have the back more upright.
Mrs is open to a change, especially as the CRV isn't exactly frugal on fuel & parts.
Gonna send her a few different cars, gauge her opinion.
My favourite is the Altea XL if I'm honest. Soulless practical transport, and low costs due to VAG parts bin.
Will update as I go along.
