Just an idea - is there an easy way to make cash donations at RRG towards the forum running costs ? Some kind of "donations" point at the merchandise stall on Sunday (or in the campsite at beer o'clock ) might be a worthwhile experiment

Hey that is a lovely thought and I do appreciate that people want to donate to the site some times. However the site does make a bit of money (not a lot I hasten to add or I'd be more able to work less hours a week at my day job), so it can pay its way. I have plans to do more and maybe make a bit more, but I want it to make more because it deserve to do that based on what it offers people, rather than ad-hoc donations.
There are many ways we could make a bit more in order to pay for things (like the image hosting), but I don't want to exploit people's goodwill to the forum, people work hard to earn their money and I'll not likely take that from them without offering something I believe worthy of that money. Hopefully when I've got a bit of clear mental space (when show stuff is quieter) I can work it out a bit more.

This is quite easy firstly you need an audience - a certain gathering by any chance ? you then need a load of car related stuff that people are falling over and don't use but others could use - can be anything from useful parts, surplus spares, unwanted tools, automobilia, etc, etc - owners are willing to part with said things that they are falling over but would like to see a little bit of money for them in return.
So has it comes beer o clock at the gathering you hold an auction - vendors lots are sold off with a 15 - 20% commission - said commission goes in the RR hosting fund - provides a load of good entertainment (mystery lots are superb for this) for a hour or so and everybody benefits - organised it quite a few times at club level - needs a few rules like minimum £5 lot values otherwise you can go on forever selling 50p lots - but loads of potential here

We sort of already do that... the money goes to charity. I have to say we're not hurting for money, we get a bit from the google ads on here, a bit from ebay referral, a bit from the store/merch, it pays for the hosting as it is. I think what has prompted this current questioning of where we can get some money is because of the image hosting stuff, which is a whole different kettle of fish to running a reasonably sized community. At the moment my plan is to most likely keep the image hosting on site as free, but then for people to be able to have paid for accounts where they can manage their photos/galleries/builds etc. I've got a feature list as long as your arm to implement that would make it worth while. I have also in the past considered a kind of members club thing, but I don't want it to be a 'club', but it could have events for members, pre-sale on RR events, exclusive offers, sundry other stuff. It struck me though that a bunch of people would do it just to get the pre-sale on Gathering camping, which is basically saying Gathering camping is £x more expensive if you want to guarantee it. Which isn't really how I work. Still considering this one as I think it could be a pretty cool thing.
